“OUR RIGHTS ARE CHRISTY CLARK'S RESPONSIBILITY"
SRO residents targeted for using the RTA against slumlord call for
Provincial support
VANCOUVER: On Thursday August 18th another chapter in Palace and
Wonder hotel residents’ and community organizations’ fight for SRO
tenants rights will unfold when the first of 11 complaints in a group
Residential Tenancy Act action will be heard.
---
Press conference about group RTA action against slumlord
Thursday August 18th
11:15am
Pathways Information Centre, in front of the RTA desk
(North-East corner of Main and Hastings St)
---
At this press conference former Palace and Wonder hotel residents will
speak out about the dangers, threats, and assaults they have suffered
from slumlord George Wolsey for taking part in this action and for
supporting the injunction effort city council began in June. One
resident will describe how Wolsey has retaliated against him this week
for taking part in the group RTA action. These tenants will ask for
Provincial support for their rights to access due process.
Former Palace and Wonder hotel tenants, along with a representative
from BC Association of People on Methadone (BCAPOM) will describe how
Wolsey has abused the power he gained through controlling methadone
distribution, and why the Province must prioritize methadone reforms
driven by user-organizations.
A statement will be made at the press conference from Jenny Kwan’s
office about what the province will do to protect SRO tenants’ rights.
Also, come hear Doug King from Pivot Legal society and complainants in
the group complaint explain what evidence he will be bringing forward
in this process and how the RTA process will work.
