These are what seem to be the women directors who are featured by VIFF as
winners from other film festivals. I don’t have dates for them, but maybe
we can plan some viewing trips: PURE
Winner, Flash Forward Award (best first feature), Pusan 2010; Best Film,
Ghent 2011.

Newcomer Alicia Vikander is outstanding as a troubled high-school dropout
determined to rise above her chaotic home life in Lisa Langseth's powerful
drama. Tackling issues of class and culture, *Pure* is a smartly written,
brilliantly acted debut for both Langseth and Vikander.
WISH ME AWAY
Winner, Grand Jury Prize: Documentary, Los Angeles 2011.

For 30 years, the supremely charismatic country star Chely Wright prayed:
“Please, God… Don’t let me be gay.” Finally, Wright risks the wrath of her
family and the whole of conservative America by *very* publicly coming out.
Bobbie Birleffi and Beverly Kopf capture Wright's remarkable transformation
from closeted crooner to risk-taking advocate.
CIRCUMSTANCE
Winner, Audience Award, Sundance 2011.

A daring exploration of a lesbian relationship in contemporary Tehran that
also speaks volumes about family life and politics, Maryam Keshavarz's debut
feature is an ambitious, engaging and provocative drama that has been
causing waves on the international film scene.
SOMEWHERE BETWEEN

"One needs several hearts to survive the breakage inflicted by [Linda
Goldstein Knowlton's] delicately wrought, deeply felt docu-profile of four
teenage girls... All are Chinese adoptees, and all are trying to come to
terms with that fact as they navigate the already perilous waters of
American adolescence." Variety
MISS REPRESENTATION
Winner, Audience Award: Documentary, Sonoma 2011.
USA | Jennifer Siebel Newsom | View
Trailer<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=9m8v4bdab&et=1107139206563&s=8069&e=001b4Ci8uXnKgEDuiIzFH1wjab7oXSN9mdPvZIlP9vKF1hBd6Q4MrVLnZYWVV69JOuejZ1qDRSdATJwKHff-rJwTM_iwwF3_FQxEwuPwmKT37oT9VEFqtfsVw==>
Outraged by the damage wrought by media misogyny, Jennifer Siebel Newsom
issues this angry yet cogent call to arms. Damning statistics speak for
themselves while the firsthand accounts of the discrimination endured by
high-profile women set the blood boiling.
