SOLIDARITY RALLY WITH LOCKED OUR WORKERS - SUPPOSRT OUR LOCKED OUT STAFF

Dear SFPIRG Supporters,

On Friday July the 8th the SFSS Space and Oversight Committee recommended
that the SFSS terminate the current lease with SFPIRG. This recommendation
was made without consulting us in good faith or considering the needs of
students accessing our space and services every day. The Space and Oversight
Committee made this recommendation based on the stated desire to provide
students with more "student space".

SFPIRG is a student space.

SFPIRG has been on this campus as a social and environmental justice
resource centre since 1981. SFPIRG is a student-based and student-directed
non-profit organization that offers not only community-based research
opportunities for students, but also student communal spaces (e.g. lounge,
meeting room), a bike tool co-op, training and materials for student
organizing, printing/photocopying, outreach/postering support, a wide range
of critical academic and grassroots resources, infrastructural support
(funding, training, storage) for student groups, and most importantly, a
diverse and vibrant student community passionate about social and
environmental justice.

Many students, clubs (such as WUSC, OxFam, the Dzaleka Project, and Open
Media), and departmental student unions utilize both our space and our
resources. SFPIRG is a space that is open to all students at SFU.

Our space in the rotunda is vital in order for SFPIRG to offer these
services to students. Having this space is what allows SFPIRG to provide
services to students, network with other likeminded organizations such as
Out on Campus, the Women's Centre, ACHSA, and the FNSA, and stay relevant
and accessible.

If you are interested in supporting SFPIRG, please e-mail sfpirg at sfu.ca ,
call 778-782-4360 , or drop by our offices at TC 326, SFU Burnaby. We are
open Monday to Friday from 10:30am to 4:30pm, and are happy to answer your
questions.

SFPIRG is student space, DSU's and club's space, and everybody's space!

AS THE LOCK OUT CONTINUES...

As the lock out continues, the need for support on the picket line is
increasingly important. Some of the locked out workers are reporting feeling
very isolated and unsupported. Last week, a small group of students had the
first Picket Picnic. Our plan is to continue these lunchtime events until
the lock out ends. If you are up on campus this Wednesday, please consider
joining us for this week's picnic.

Here are the details:
-Picnics begin at 12 at the picket line in MBC (one floor down from the main
entrance) At 12:30, we move to the Rotunda
-Bring your lunch and have a conversation with the workers over lunch
-Lemonade and cake are provided
-If you are financially able, consider bringing snacks or grocery store gift
cards to donate to the locked out workers

Last week's picnic was a really great chance to talk with other folks in the
SFU community about where our university is headed, to hear stories about
its past, and to connect with the locked out staff.

DOCUMENTARY SCREENING – THE VANISHING OF THE BEES

Doors open at 6:30pm, film starts at 7:00pm (90 minute or 53 minute film),
Q&A to follow.

SFU Harbour Centre - Labatt Threate (HC 1700)

Who should attend: Anyone and everyone! Costs: Free!

Honeybees have been mysteriously disappearing across the planet, literally
vanishing from their hives!

Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomenon has brought beekeepers to
crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples, broccoli,
watermelon, onions, cherries and a hundred other fruits and vegetables.
Commercial honeybee operations pollinate crops that make up one out of every
three bites of food on our tables.

Vanishing of the Bees follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and
Dave Mendes as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill
pollination contracts across the U.S. The film explores the struggles they
face as the two friends plead their case on Capital Hill and travel across
the Pacific Ocean in the quest to protect their honeybees.

On Tuesday August 9th, Sustainable SFU, along with our partners, the Pacific
Institute for Climate Solutions, SFU Sustainability and SFU Vancouver, is
proud to be holding a community event for students, staff, faculty, and the
public to come learn about this mysterious turn of events and shed light on
what is happening to the honey bee. Watch the film and hear from one of the
film directors, Maryam Henein, and current SFU Professor of Dialogue Mark
Winston, a international authority on bees. Q&A will follow the screening.

If you have any questions about this event, please contact

Duncan Wlodarczak, Executive Director, Sustainable SFU.
