Why don't we start with some introductions?
Many of us have met each other at the conference or elsewhere, but getting
some more info could help us associate names/email addresses with real live
people!
About Me:
I'm a freelance journalist, editor and media consultant. I write primarily
about feminism, social justice and human rights. You can read some of my
work on my website: www.joannachiu.com. In addition to writing, I also help
non-profit organizations enhance their media communications.
I've been involved in activism and non-profit work from a young age. As a
12-year-old kid in middle school, I was known to my fellow classmates as the
"scary feminist." Since then, I've volunteered and worked for non-profits
like Oxfam Canada, AWARE Canada, and Antigone Magazine (co-host of the WAM
conference).
Last year, I did a magazine internship at The Nation magazine. While in New
York, I got involved in the WAM New York chapter, and was able to meet some
great mentors and allies. That's why I wanted to help bring WAM to Canada.
I had a great time organizing the conference with my fellow WAM organizers.
We're having a potluck today to debrief the conference. After that, we will
work on doing an orientation for new organizing committee members and a
social for all WAM members.
That's all for now. If you have any questions about what I'm about, just
ask. :)
