Harm reduction event sessions available on-demand
If you couldn't make our Harm Reduction themed virtual event last week, the
recorded sessions are now available to watch on-demand. Dr. M-J Milloy
spoke to history and context of the continuing toxic drug supply
catastrophe; the Interior Health Youth Harm Reduction team shared their
unique resources and online course. Both sessions featured great discussion
on the nuances of harm reduction. *Learn more. *

Court case to save supervised consumption services in Ontario
Yesterday, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice began hearing a
constitutional challenge to the Government of Ontario’s so-called Community
Care and Recovery Act. It was scheduled to go for two days. The Act will
force the closure of at least 10 supervised consumption sites (SCS, also
known as consumption and treatment services) across Ontario, and result in
increased toxic drug deaths and devastating health outcomes for people who
use substances. The HIV Legal Network is working with TNG Community
Services on this challenge. You can follow *live updates from TNG on

(Re)conciliation
* PAN is committed to learning about and challenging the harms of ongoing
colonialism. We recognize that the word reconciliation can be problematic
because it implies that there was a good relationship between Indigenous
and non-Indigenous people at some point in time, which wasn't necessarily
the case. We choose it because it's a recognizable term. We hope that it
connects people to dialogue and learn about the important work that needs
to be done.*
Indigenous peoples have been confronted with Trump-like leaders for
centuries. Here’s what we’ve learned
Jody Wilson-Raybould comes from the Musgamagw Tsawateineuk /Laich-Kwil-Tach
people of northern Vancouver Island, and is also the former Minister of
Justice and Attorney General of Canada. In a piece published last week, she
writes: "While this moment might understandably feel new, different and
threatening for the vast majority of Canadians, for Indigenous peoples,
it’s is as old as Canada itself. And we’ve learned many lessons about
leadership, collaboration and survival along the way. Canada’s leaders can
learn from Indigenous leaders about how best to respond to a threat we
understand well." *Learn more.

With peer support, Hamilton hospital helps build trust, provide comfort for
those in substance use program
Marcie McIlveen never thought she'd work in a hospital. Due to her negative
experiences in treatment for substance use disorder on about 14 occasions,
"I hated health care, did not like it, wanted nothing to do with it,"
McIlveen said. What she endured, however, has led to the work she does
today. McIlveen is a peer support supervisor of a new St. Joseph's
Healthcare Hamilton project — it involves people who've experienced
addiction offering support to patients in the substance use program. *Learn

Research
Seeing trauma triggers changes in the brain
For years, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been studied primarily
in people who experience trauma firsthand. But what about those who witness
it (10% of all PTSD cases)? Research has found that indirect trauma and
direct trauma create different biological responses, which could mean they
require different treatment strategies that target distinct brain pathways.
Additionally, they uncovered sex-specific differences in how male and
female brains process indirect fear memories. *Learn more.

Injectable Therapy is 'magic' for those who can't take HIV pills
Patients who struggle to take daily HIV pills can benefit from long-acting
injectable treatments, a new study by researchers at University of
California San Francisco (UCSF) has found. UCSF researchers are the first
to demonstrate that the approach works for the patients who need it the
most. They wanted to see if it would work for patients who could not
control their infections with pills, whether that was because they had
trouble swallowing or remembering, or because they did not have a place to
live and faced other life challenges, such as substance use disorder. *Learn
