Joni Oldhoff speak with Dr. Modupe Tunde-Byass about anti-black racism and
the impacts on reproductive health. Topics being discussed include
anti-black racism and how it affects reproductive health today, doctors
thinking black people have “supernatural pain tolerance”, false beliefs
white people have around the medical system, and overall how much racism,
discrimination, poverty and other structural and systemic inequalities
impact the mental, physical and emotional health of ALL Black women in
Canada. Dr. Modupe brings these topics to light and speaks on what needs to
be done better.
(Re)conciliation

A core approach of PAN’s work is our commitment to ongoing learning, and we
centre this section in that commitment to see and challenge the harms in
ongoing colonialism. We recognize that the word reconciliation can be
problematic, because it implies there was a good relationship between
Indigenous and non-Indigenous people at some point in time, which isn’t the
case. After much discussion, we choose it because it's a recognizable term,
and hope that it connects people to the important work that needs to be
done.

The chief of Ehattesaht First Nation, along with the Nation's council,
declared a state of emergency in the community on February 9, 2023. The
declaration's text states it aims to "generate the immediate and dedicated
response the Nation requires from the federal and provincial governments to
alleviate the suffering that [is] being felt in the Ehattesaht family."
Chief John Simon says, "We have lots of different governments that actually
own who we are as a people … The thing is that those things can't even
collaborate on one thing to actually generate an outcome."

BC Labour Minister Harry Bains said the National Day for Truth and
Reconciliation will be observed as a statutory holiday beginning in
September 2023. The statutory holiday is a result of a call to action from
the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which asked the federal government
to establish a day to honour residential school survivors, their families
and communities. The date was chosen to coincide with Orange Shirt Day,
named to commemorate a story told by Phyllis Webstad, whose prized orange
shirt was taken from her on her first day at St. Joseph Mission Residential
School near Williams Lake. Webstad appeared at the province's press
conference and said, "There is no longer an excuse for anybody, no matter
what age, to not know what happened to us," she said.

Avis O'Brien (N'alaga) creates addictions programming for treatment centres

not exist," O'Brien said.

Instead of addressing structural oppression, abstinence-based and top-down
institutional approaches to treatment and care can actually make it worse.
Yet for youth in particular, these remain the default. We know that harm
reduction saves lives. It can also build lives and communities of care,
including among young people who become involved in harm reduction
organizing and activism.
