We've sent a letter to Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Jennifer
Whiteside, requesting a meeting to discuss support for people doing
frontline community work. "PAN members are working on the frontlines of the
drug poisoning crisis, including in small urban, rural and remote
communities. Our members excel at relational care, meeting people where
they are at and providing services across the care continuum. The vast
majority of the funding provided by the province to address the drug
poisoning crisis has been retained for services within health authorities.
Community level organizations in the health sector do not receive core
funding. The lack of job security and in particular, negative impact on
peers and those with lived and living experiences doing this work are more
acute. This undermines the very people who are best situated to provide
support, nurture relationships, and offer the leadership and solutions
required to effectively address this crisis."

In 2020, award-winning Canadian author Esi Edugyan was invited to deliver
the prestigious CBC Massey Lectures, exploring the relationship between art
and race. This incisive analysis was collected into Out of the Sun: On Race
and Storytelling. Through the lens of visual art, literature, film, and the
author’s lived experience, Out of the Sun examines the depiction of Black
histories in art, offering new perspectives to challenge the accepted
narrative. If you're in what's colonially called Victoria, you can attend
live; folks elsewhere can attend online. February 16.

(Re)conciliation

A core approach of PAN’s work is our commitment to ongoing learning, and we
centre this section in that commitment to see and challenge the harms in
ongoing colonialism. We recognize that the word reconciliation can be
problematic, because it implies there was a good relationship between
Indigenous and non-Indigenous people at some point in time, which isn’t the
case. After much discussion, we choose it because it's a recognizable term,
and hope that it connects people to the important work that needs to be
done.

The college that regulates Manitoba's physicians is apologizing for its
current and historical failure to respond to Indigenous-specific racism in
the medical profession. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba
(CPSM) said its responsibility also extends to the racist actions and
inactions perpetuated by physicians, residents, medical students, clinical
assistants and physician assistants. "We accept this responsibility, and we
apologize," said the statement delivered by college representatives at the
Special Chiefs Assembly on Health Legislation, hosted by the Assembly of
Manitoba Chiefs.

Lower Education - #2 of 8 Key Issues for Indigenous Peoples in Canada

Education is considered a human right in Canada. Yet, while Canada has one
of the world's highest levels of educational attainment, the graduation
rate for Indigenous students remains far lower than that of non-Indigenous
students. How is that possible? The answer lies in the history of Canada.
This is the latest blog from Indigenous Corporate Training.

This information sheet from First Nations Health Authority breaks down some
myths, about what decriminalization is and isn't. "Decriminalization alone
won’t solve the toxic drug crisis, but together with harm reduction
strategies, treatment and recovery options, overdose prevention,
community-based initiatives, and systems of support, decriminalization will
help save lives and relationships."

The low representation of women in clinical trials has led to some efficacy
and safety differences between men and women being missed, reports Dr
Shuang Zhou of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
African-American women were particularly underrepresented in clinical
trials of new antiretrovirals. Women make up the majority of people with
HIV globally, but there is a chronic underrepresentation of cisgender women
in antiretroviral clinical trials. This lack of representation results in
sex-based differences being unknown.
