The PAN team is excited to be in the development phase of the
Organizational Stigma Assessment Cycle Project (OSAC). The push for this
project came from community input over the past few years at the Stigma
Reduction Deliberative Dialogue and Let’s Talk Stigma Reduction. Our first
blog introduces the project, and an essential part of the process: finding
the right words.

The HIV Legal Network has released its newest brief “A gender-centred
dialogue on alternative justice responses to HIV non-disclosure
criminalization”. It synthesizes and builds upon a roundtable event to
gather cross-sector perspectives about whether an alternative justice
approach is warranted or appropriate in situations of non-disclosure. Given
the interaction between HIV criminalization, disclosure, and gender,
including the risks of gender-based violence and gendered power dynamics,
gender-centred considerations grounded the discussion.

organizations' staff and volunteers, CATIE has develped a workshop series
about self-testing technology, ordering and using kits; and supporting
people who use them so your organization can enhance your skills or learn
anew. Workshops that have already been offered are available on demand, and
the last one will be presented live on February 2.
(Re)conciliation
A core approach of PAN’s work is our commitment to ongoing learning, and we
centre this section in that commitment to see and challenge the harms in
ongoing colonialism. We recognize that the word reconciliation can be
problematic, because it implies there was a good relationship between
Indigenous and non-Indigenous people at some point in time, which isn’t the
case. After much discussion, we choose it because it's a recognizable term,
and hope that it connects people to the important work that needs to be
done.

First Nations groups are criticizing their exclusion from an upcoming
meeting between federal, provincial and territorial governments aiming to
reach a funding deal to improve the country's ailing health-care system.
The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) in Saskatchewan said
in a Thursday news release both it and the national Assembly of First
Nations (AFN) are "dismayed" by the snub. "There is no reconciliation for
First Nations when we continue to be excluded from these crucial
discussions and decision-making processes." said FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron
in the release.

>From HIV Legal Network: This week, we are watching with great interest as
the possession of some drugs in small amounts will finally be
decriminalized in the Province of British Columbia. While in theory a
positive step forward in the quest to end an escalating drug poisoning
crisis that is driven by bad drug policy, we remain deeply concerned that
this “decriminalization” model neglects the lived realities of those most
at risk for drug poisoning and will continue to criminalize many people who
use drugs.

Why inventing a vaccine for AIDS is tougher than for COVID

If scientists can develop a vaccine so quickly for COVID-19, why can't they
come up with a vaccine to prevent HIV? A big part of the reason, says
Mitchell Warren, is the rate at which the AIDS virus mutates. "The world
has tracked the variants of COVID," he says. Those variants include Alpha,
Beta, Delta, Omicron and subvariants. But HIV is much more variable. "There
are more variants of HIV in one person's body within days after infection
than all the variants of COVID." That means that even as a vaccine is being
developed to attack HIV, the virus may be mutating out of its reach.

Visa issues prevented scores of scientists and activists from attending
last year’s International AIDS Conference in Montréal after the Canadian
government allegedly failed to fulfill commitments to fast-track
applications. Now, the International AIDS Society (IAS) is changing how
host cities are selected, but it may take radical transparency to help make
more equitable access a reality.
