People living with HIV (PLHIV) have been reported to be at increased risk
for severe COVID-19 outcomes. Yet it remains unclear how vaccines work in
this population as they were mostly underrepresented in the early vaccine
trials that determined vaccine approvals. Presenter Monte Strong presented
information from research studies to explore these questions.

Connections between transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people are filled
with potential. Despite the presence of peer support in TGD communities for
generations, its exchange between TGD people – along with its power to
promote resilience – have been under-researched in academic scholarship. A
group of researchers affiliated with the University of British Columbia’s
School of Social Work are pursuing trans-led research on experiences of
peer support among TGD people. In this webinar, we will draw on insights
from our qualitative study in which we held one-to-one interviews with 35
TGD individuals who experienced seeking, receiving, and/or providing peer
support. Webinar: May 23.

Long acting injectable treatments that allow for those living with HIV to
receive one injection every one or two months – instead of taking pills
every day — are available everywhere in Canada except for British Columbia.
AIDS Vancouver is working with community partners Afro-Canadian Positive
Network, Community-Based Research Centre, Health Initiative for Men,
Vancouver Island Persons Living With HIV/AIDS Society, and YouthCO to make
injectable HIV treatment available to all people living with HIV in BC as
soon as possible. Listen to CBC radio piece on the campaign

HIV advocates frustrated over access to monthly treatment, but researcher
cautions over eligibility

As noted above, AIDS Vancouver is calling on the province and the BC Centre
for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (BC-CfE) to expand access to a long-term
injectable treatment for HIV (see article below), but according to the
research foundation, being eligible for the treatment comes with complex
considerations. Julio Montaner, executive director of BC-CfE, says only a
small group of people can safely and effectively take the medication.
Montaner says applicants need to meet specific criteria regarding their
lifestyle, age, weight, history of drug resistance, and track record of
treatment usage. People outside of the eligibility window are at high risk
of developing drug resistancy, he says, which can make other HIV treatments
ineffective.

(Re)conciliation

A core approach of PAN’s work is our commitment to ongoing learning, and we
centre this section in that commitment to see and challenge the harms in
ongoing colonialism. We recognize that the word reconciliation can be
problematic, because it implies there was a good relationship between
Indigenous and non-Indigenous people at some point in time, which isn’t the
case. After much discussion, we choose it because it's a recognizable term,
and hope that it connects people to the important work that needs to be
done.

It can be difficult to access mental health services, especially those that
are affirming of 2S/LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer,
Two-Spirit, and other gender- and sexually-diverse) people. In addition to
barriers that are commonly experienced by people of all sexual orientations
and gender identities (e.g., cost, accessible location,
embarrassment/shame), 2S/LGBTQ+ people often face added barriers when
navigating mental health supports. MindMapBC helps users to locate mental
health services that are accessible, free or low-cost, and/or
2S/LGBTQ+-affirming. Find services near you, at https://www.mindmapbc.ca.

Why?: Courageous conversations on sexual violence against teens

“If there’s one film I have to make, it’s this one. If I get up in the
morning wanting to make a difference, this film will let me do that.” This
message to NFB producer Denis McCready is what initially got Why?—a film on
sexual violence and teens—off the ground. Ambitious? Yes. Naïve? No doubt.
But also an emotional appeal that insisted on being heard. It’s one thing
to survive sexual assault yourself, but when it’s your kids or other minors
who are the victims, that’s another matter altogether: it’s as if your
whole world has turned upside down.
