In response to the recent loosening of COVID-19 restrictions in BC, we are
pleased to report some exciting updates to PAN’s operations. As of April
1st, 2022 PAN will begin planning and convening in-person events again.
Anyone participating in or attending such events will need to provide proof
of full vaccination (2 or more doses) – unless they have a medical
exemption – and be masked when indoors. Although the PHO orders and
recommendations after April 8th do not require this (with the exception of
visiting long-term care facilities), we want to continue to ensure the
health and safety of all those who attend our events, especially the most
vulnerable and those who are immunocompromised. We will review this again
in September. Learn more

"The member organizations of PAN write to urge you to grant the province of
BC’s application for a section 56(1) exemption, to protect all BC residents
from the application of section 4(1) of the CDSA. We also submit that the
thresholds contained within the province’s application are the absolute
minium of what should be included in the exemption and should not be
reduced. Smaller thresholds would disadvantage people in rural or more
remote areas; would further disadvantage people based on their income /
finances, where they live and the access they have to a safer supply." Continue

Options for Sexual Health is a valuable ally of PAN, a frequent participant
in our meetings and webinars, and part of the Collective Impact Network. It
is going through a process to review their 45 clinics and identify which
communities may lose sexual health services, due to lack of funding
increases since 2011. They would greatly appreciate any support from
colleagues across the province to provide a letter of support for their
work, and to share concerns of the impact of closures that will affect
underrepresented populations such as youth, Indigenous and 2SLGBTQAI+
community members. Get letter template

(Re)conciliation
A core approach of PAN’s work is our commitment to ongoing learning, and we
centre this section in that commitment to see and challenge the harms in
ongoing colonialism. We recognize that the word reconciliation can be
problematic, because it implies there was a good relationship between
Indigenous and non-Indigenous people at some point in time, which isn’t the
case. After much discussion, we choose it because it's a recognizable term,
and hope that it connects people to the important work that needs to be
done.

Julia Weder last December to form the rap group Siijuu Jaadas, which means
"cool ladies" in the Haida language. Jiixa, a Haida language teacher in
Skidegate, B.C., is one of nine core members of the Skidegate Haida
Immersion Program, who received an honourary Doctor of Law degree from
Vancouver Island University in June 2019 for their efforts to preserve the
language. According to the Haida Nation council, the language has only two
dozen fluent speakers left.

Thousand-year-old practices are at the core of wildfire mitigation efforts
in the Westbank First Nation Community Forest. Mitigation work involves
removing ladder fuels and surface fuels to help space out mature trees.
Each tree is pruned at least two to three metres above its base so fire
can’t carry flames up the branches and spread to surrounding trees.
Additionally, crown contact between mature trees is thinned, reducing the
chance of fire jumping between them.

This report was developled by a multi-disciplinary panel comprised of
experts in substance use and addictions, medicine, public health, lived
experience, regulatory practices, First Nations health, education, poverty
reduction, policy, research, housing, labour and law enforcement. The panel
identified three key areas to reduce deaths due to illicit drug toxicity:
safer drug supply, a coordinated, goal-driven Provincial Strategy; and
comprehensive continuum of substance use care. These findings are the basis
for a series of recommendations made to the chief coroner by the panel.
