The bill that the federal government introduced last week to repeal
mandatory minimum sentences and offer alternatives to prosecution for
simple drug possession is a step in the right direction, but doesn’t go far
enough. PAN and others endorse a call for change.

The Personal Experiences of Stigma Survey has been a result of almost 2
years of work by a group of PAN partners, allies and community members who
are working on stigma reduction across different fields. This working group
emerged from conversations between PAN and the Community Action Initiative
(CAI) about the potential benefits of having a harmonized tool to help us
better understand stigma in our communities.

The Public Health Agency of Canada’s (PHAC) online survey for First
Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples is aimed at understanding the impact of
the COVID-19 pandemic on access to sexually transmitted and blood-borne
infection (STBBI) prevention, testing, treatment, and harm reduction
services. If you have not yet had the opportunity to complete the survey,
there is still time! The survey has been extended until January 14, 2022.

(Re)conciliation

A core approach of PAN’s work is our commitment to ongoing learning, and we
centre this section in that commitment to see and challenge the harms in
ongoing colonialism. We recognize that for some, the word reconciliation
can be problematic, because it implies there was a good relationship
between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people at some point in time, which
isn’t the case. After much discussion, we choose to use it because it's a
recognizable term, and hope that it connects people to the important work
that needs to be done.

2021 is already BC's most deadly year for toxic drug deaths, and that is
based on data that goes just to the end of October. The province’s per
capita death rate is now 41.2 per 100,000 people, double what it was in
2016 when the public health emergency was declared, and nearly eight times
what it was when documentation of toxic drug deaths began in 1995.

by policy."

In a ruling likely to send shockwaves through BC's justice system, Campbell
River Provincial Court Judge Barbara Flewelling broke with years of
precedent set by BC's top court, suspending sentence for a woman who was
facing up to three years in jail for trafficking in fentanyl, placing her
on probation instead. Defence lawyer Sarah Runyon says "It's important
because it's re-evaluating our approach to punishing people who use drugs
and sell drugs to survive."

The World Health Organization has recently designated the omicron variant
of COVID-19 as a variant of concern. Many people have questions about what
the omicron variant is, what it may mean for our public health response to
COVID-19, and what we should be doing to keep ourselves and our communities
safe. This information session will discuss what it means for communities
affected by HIV and hepatitis C and our community-based response to the
pandemic. December 16.

Why fighting Omicron should include ramping up HIV prevention
<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001a9aU-104oJPyi0rbw9n7EFCGpPZ3VoV3msArDw_JFTx7LbK1D-R72TS6qlUKbV4Y5MfGuUJSUxTBEvWm6FcqaT6CMYpFbixXfmvjm2HGsqNj8ELt7kQ29YYFVnB0ItxTuWkTgzx_Lc3fSXBgHQYV6aEvCjIQyVQskxvpFkkgw1TGZo-4nr2_yfEBdo8uJrrb-eubqKnBWReIdQ0RQ3Pdqgp6J7WzCE1J5fYYohaMNtSkz3pCAHHozCXOKTZ6TyBZ3Xm8JgL6LHw=&c=Z2ioyjex_KCJemxwGCMg4xD2hx0zCYEY5Z95Ycv-3pIDgzg3i9Kavg==&ch=weJiNf7BkE3KYeSR0ZH9TpNPqEpVdMD4wmZ7SNkoPCsR9XZVgJwmzQ==>
Where did Omicron come from? By all accounts it is a weird variant. Though
highly mutated, it descended not from one of the other variants of concern,
such as Alpha, Beta or Delta, but from coronavirus that was circulating
maybe 18 months ago. Researchers are exploring its origin, and some data
suggests it may have arisen in a person with a weakened immune system:
someone having cancer treatment perhaps, an organ transplant patient or
someone with uncontrolled HIV.
