Good points, Margarite
I always gain exceptional insight from opportunities to gather with women.
Mixed groups have an equal but different dynamic. It is like the
difference between a group of friends who are all there together with their
partners .. and a group sharing stories and laughs without their partners
present. A different kind of dynamic emerges; stories shared that might
not be comfortable with a partner present; deeper level of connection. And
then, when a central common force exists within a group, combined with the
distinctly singular common ground of identity as female, the insights of
the common force become stark. At the same time, comfort and safety is
implied by a common understanding. I, for one, do not comfortably explain
the way HIV has affected every corner of life (not just the health
perspective) to someone who has no first hand knowledge. I *do* explain
myself, by way of my own little educational and preventive contributions,
but I always feel inwardly nervous and second-rate. VIVA is a unique forum.
A larger entity than the listserv would be brilliant. The question is, how
do we make that happen when we tend to be geographically scattered? No
matter what we do, gathering requires at least a minimal expense
individually and collectively. Not impossible but certainly a
consideration. (I know too well how thinly spread a monthly income is.)
Wouldn't it be great if a physical group could gather that, as well as
being socially supportive, could generate some kind of business venture
that would financially improve our lot? (again ... no specifically
complete thought here)
I don't really know what is meant by "programming". Does that mean
services like Positive Living had?
Just my 2 cent processing ...
hugs all around ...
Danielle
