Making it Work (MIW) is a Community-Based Research (CBR) project that is
looking at integrated services for people living with HIV, hepatitis C,
and/or challenges with mental health and substance use, with a particular
focus on Indigenous service delivery models and cultural safety. The
project uses a Two-Eyed Seeing approach and Realist Evaluation to help us
understand why, how, when, and for whom these services work best.

After years of advocacy, Health Canada is expected to approve the first HIV
self-test in the country over the coming weeks. As testing is the critical
first step in HIV prevention, treatment, and care cascade, HIV self-testing
will be an additional tool in our tool-box to reach GBTQ2+ men who
experience vulnerabilities for HIV as well as the undiagnosed.

Equitable access to hepatitis C treatment for people who inject drugs
Treatment opportunities for many people who inject drugs are limited by
various healthcare, social, and structural barriers. This session will
share challenges and opportunities to ensuring that hepatitis C treatments
in BC are accessible to all, including people who inject drugs.

Who Are We Missing? Changing the Hep C Cascade of Care for Women
The cascade of care is a framework used by the health system to track
people in stages of care, from diagnosis through cure. This session in Hep
C in Focus will turn that cascade upside down, using data from the BC
Hepatitis Testers Cohort and hearing firsthand from women with lived
experience about how they experience the cascade.

Just added! Stigma Big and Small: Stigma Experiences of Women
At each stage of program development, women with lived experience on the
planning committee have talked about how stigma presents before, during,
and post diagnosis, and even cure. This panel discussion will share the
impacts of stigma and how to create better environments for women dealing
with hepatitis C before and after treatment.

The First Nations Leadership Council (FNLC) is dismayed with the
circumstances surrounding the investigation announced by BC Health Minister
Adrian Dix, specifically related to a “game” to guess the intoxication
level of Indigenous and other Emergency Room (ER) patients. The
investigation must be transparent and seek to uncover the extensiveness of
this abhorrent behavior, including which doctors and hospitals are involved
and whether similar repulsive behavior occurred with other minority groups.

Gendering the Scene: We need to listen to women and gender-diverse people

Unless our approach to drug policy changes, people will continue to
overdose and experience other drug-related harms. And if this re-imagining
is going to benefit everyone, attention must be paid to women and
gender-diverse people. There is scant research in Canada on women and
gender-diverse people who use drugs, which is why the Canadian HIV/AIDS
Legal Network sought to compile what research does exist into one report:
Gendering the Scene: Women, Gender-Diverse People, and Harm Reduction in
Canada.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is preparing for the planned
launch, in Fall 2020, of open solicitations for the HIV and Hepatitis C
Community Action Fund (CAF) and the Harm Reduction Fund (HRF). PHAC is
hosting virtual sessions with STBBI organizations to outline and seek
feedback on the proposed process for the Fall and to confirm the two Funds’
priorities, which were outlined in the Government of Canada Five-Year STBBI
Action Plan released last summer. Update: resources for review before the
sessions are now available.
