Subject: Exciting New Training Project/Study in planning stage seeking
interest from WLHIV!
To: viva <Viva at lists.resist.ca>
Good morning ViVA women! As promised, here is the email about a proposed
study seeking interest from WLHIV:
Last year I had the opportunity to be virtually introduced to an amazing
researcher with vision and goals I completely endorse, and align with in
very real ways. As many of you know, my background is in dance and theatre
and have on many occasions commented "all persons can dance, it's not about
training to be a dancer - it's about dancing".
So, as I mentioned briefly the other day - this proposed research study (
see description below) is looking to secure interest from as many women as
possible, that would be either interested in training to become part-time
dance instructors (NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE NECESSARY), or in taking classes
when offered. *The commitment is substantial - please see details below. *
This is an exceptionally unique proposed study, with I believe sustainable
"legs" that could reach across the country, and, impact WLHIV in
profoundly life - altering ways - perhaps even inspiring a new career path
for some!
*So read below, and please email me directly at shetognazzini at gmail.com
<shetognazzini at gmail.com> expressing your interest. If you just want to
ask some questions - please feel free to do so on this thread. *
*Thanks everyone! Can't wait to hear from as many of you as possible. The
team would like to have a letter from women who are interested in becoming
trained dance instructors by February 25th. So, if you can please let me
know as soon as possible about your interest, then I can draft up an email
of support for the research team.*

*The following is a brief description of the project: ( This is a draft in
progress )*
"We propose to examine the acceptability and uptake of, and adherence to a
12-week aerobic dance program that is led by dance instructors who
themselves are women living with HIV. We further propose to examine the
effects of the dance program on traditional health markers, such as resting
heart rate, blood pressure, waist circumference, and hemoglobin A1C, and
cellular aging health markers, such as telomere length. We will examine
changes in social and psychological wellbeing that result from the dance
program. The long-term goal for this study is to better understand our
program and its effects to help refine a future larger, pan-Canadian
randomized study with a larger cohort of women. By completing this project,
we expect to enhance the health of WLWHIV, and support mental and social
wellbeing.
We are inviting women to become part-time dance instructors. Funding will
be provided to receive certification in BC as a fitness instructor, for
insurance purposes, and training with our collaborating San
Francisco-based dance studio, Rhythm and Motion. If the project is funded,
all interested women will receive payment of $30/hour for all training
(expected ~100 hours of training over a few weeks). Further, all trained
women will receive $30/hour per dance session, including travel to and from
the class (approximately 2 hours of your time per session total). Each
woman will be asked to provide 3 dance sessions per week for the 12 week
duration for other WLWHIV. We will also offer women in the control group
the opportunity to dance for 12 weeks at the end of the study, thus, there
is guaranteed employment for 24 weeks for trained dance instructors. All
dance instructors will then be able to continue teaching on their own, of
course, following completion of the study.
With a successful and feasible study, we hope that women who become dance
instructors would be interested in remaining involved in future granting
applications to extend the research study for a longer period of time and
in more cities. Our goal is to scale up the project into other cities and
across the country."
