An estimated 171,900 Canadians have injected drugs as of 2016. Two-thirds
of Canadians who inject drugs have had hepatitis C in their lifetime, and
Canadians who inject drugs are 59 times more likely to acquire HIV than
other Canadians. But with prompt diagnosis and effective treatment,
hepatitis C is curable and HIV is manageable.

Another pressing health challenge has emerged for people who inject drugs.
We are in the midst of an opioid overdose crisis, a national public health
emergency that has already taken the lives of more than 13,900 Canadians
between 2016 and June 2019. Overdose prevention and response have become a
priority for the service providers who work with this population.

But we can’t address these health challenges in isolation. People who
inject drugs deserve healthcare that addresses all of their health needs,
and that requires cooperation and coordination among different kinds of
service providers: doctors, social workers, nurses, harm reduction workers,
pharmacists and more. Wrap-around care, which connects and integrates a
range of health services on site or through defined pathways, is a proven
approach to ensure that the health of people who inject drugs is addressed
holistically.

In this issue of the *CATIE Quarterly*, we showcase evidence and models of
care that can help integrate prevention and treatment services, while
ensuring that people who inject drugs are meaningfully involved in program
development and delivery.
