[Viva] video story of HIV diagnosis

Lisa's story is as much my own. I was ill, more from the early medications
back in 1985 than from the virus, and that long ago the counseling doctor
suggested "get your affairs in order". Every sniffle, every sneeze, made
me think I was in end days. Prognosis was "within 3 years" to death. That
was easy to believe at the time because so many were dying every week. I
was volunteering most days each week at what was then Vancouver Persons
With AIDS Society when they were holding forth at the corner of Davie
Street and Bute in Vancouver's west end. Someone I was volunteering side
by side with on Friday could be shockingly gone by Monday.
Like Lisa, I was also in the midst of a new relationship with a new man. I
expected that to end immediately with this reality taking hold of my life.
I'm blessed. We are happy as ever to this day, closing in on our 30th
anniversary. Until this year I always felt I was living under a weighted
jeopardy. The news of U=U hadn't reached me until I was sponsored to
attend Positive Gathering 2018. It still seems surreal and not quite
believable. I don't think I'll ever put the concept to the test but it's
nice to know there is one more barrier between me and the ability to cause
harm.
Thank you for sharing Lisa's story.
