*GNP+ statement*
*GNP+ mourns the loss of Prudence Mabele, a leading light in the HIV
movement.*
The Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+) is mourning the death
of Prudence Mabele, who passed away earlier this week. Prudence was
a trailblazer, a strong, fierce, and beloved activist and mentor to many
people living with HIV and those in the HIV/AIDS and TB human rights
movements. As one of the first black women in South Africa during the
apartheid regime to be open about her HIV status
<http://reliefweb.int/report/south-africa/life-battling-aids>, she gave
courage to people living with HIV worldwide for more than 25 years and
through her constant engagement in the struggle to make decent services and
HIV treatment accessible for everyone who needed it.
Prudence was the founder of the Positive Women’s Network
<https://www.facebook.com/pg/positivewomensnetworksa/about/?ref=page_internal>
and
one of the founding members of Treatment Action Campaign (TAC)
<http://www.tac.org.za/> and the National Association of People Living with
HIV and AIDS of South Africa (NAPWA). <http://www.napwasa.org/>Last year,
Prudence worked tirelessly with GNP+ as the National co-chair of the
*LIVING 2016:
the Positive Leadership Summit*
<https://www.gnpplus.net/our-solutions/living-2016/the-summit/>, a
pre-conference to the International AIDS Conference, created by and for
people living with HIV to build skills, share knowledge, and develop shared
advocacy strategies. Prudence devoted her time to the pre-conference and
following her commitment she worked to motivate others to give “a voice to
people living with HIV”.
GNP+ honours the incredible legacy left by Prudence Mabele and extends our
heartfelt thoughts and condolences to Prudence’s family, colleagues,
friends and loved ones.
