The Pacific AIDS Network is pleased to announce that the study has been
officially launched in all three of its case study communities. Study site
coordinators in Prince George and Greater Vancouver (Devyn Flesher and Mona
Lee) have been interviewing people living with HIV (PLHIV), as well as
service providers and policy makers, since the summer. In Kamloops, Vicki
Nygaard (our most recent addition to the team) has just begun recruitment
and will be interviewing participants imminently.

(PLPH) is a community-based research study being co-led by Pacific AIDS
Network and the University of Victoria. It is a multi-site case study
exploring the relationship between housing and health for people living
with HIV in Greater Vancouver, Prince George, and Kamloops, and is guided
by a team of more than 40 people, including people living with HIV,
community service workers, academics, and policy makers. PLPH aims to
document people's experiences with housing and health in order to outline
housing successes and challenges in these regions. The ultimate goal of the
study is to support communities in their efforts to improve housing
services, programs, and policies for PLHIV around the province.
We are grateful to our team and local advisory groups for helping get the
data collection phase started by putting up posters in their organizations
and creating a buzz via word of mouth and email. Let's keep the momentum
going! We're still looking to recruit people in these three communities,
particularly from some populations that are harder to engage in research,
including younger PLHIV (19-30 years old), stably housed PLHIV, and those
from immigrant communities. If you know anyone who might be interested in
participating, please direct them to the appropriate contacts, listed below.

Great advances have been made in biomedical treatment allowing people
living with HIV to live near normal life expectancies, however, beyond
treating the virus itself there is still much work to be done. PLHIV
continue to experience disproportionate rates of mental health issues
compared to those who are HIV-negative. Anxiety and depression remain key
obstacles to linking, engaging, and retaining people in care yet until more
recently they have been overlooked as key barriers. During this community
forum Dr. Jennifer Wide (Psychiatrist) will provide an overview of these
two conditions and offer potential ways that they can be overcome, while
Glyn Townson (Canadian Working Group on HIV and Rehabilitation) will offer
his lived experience of dealing with their effects.
While both anxiety and depression can have detrimental effects on a person
with unknown consequences it doesn't have to be the case. Join us to learn
more about these conditions in the context of HIV. Dinner will be served.
Please RSVP to shellyt at positivelivingbc.org to reserve your spot.

documentary film, *Consent: HIV Non-Disclosure and Sexual Assault Law. *
*Consent* discusses why HIV non-disclosure has been prosecuted as sexual
assault and how, together with feminist scholars and those working to end
violence against women, we can challenge this problematic legal framing
which affects all people living with HIV.

*9th Edition : "High & Hired: PRAs with lived experience using drugs." *hosted
by James Watson
"*Nothing About Us, Without Us*" is an often used harm-reduction mantra
calling for the full participation of the drug using community in decisions
that affect their lives. Health research often includes people with lived
experience using drugs as PRAs. But how do we navigate the complexities of
this involvement? Stigma, boundaries and power- sharing are all issues that
need to be addressed. People who use drugs are criminalized in our society;
how can we engage in ethical research equitably and safely? Could the role
of PRA be developed as a harm reduction strategy?
To help us discuss the issues, challenge stereotypes and identify ways of
working we are bringing together two exciting guests to offer their unique
perspectives on PRAs with lived experience using drugs. Terry Howard the
Director of Community-Based Research at Positive Living BC as well as Sean
Le Blanc the Chair of the Drug User Advocacy League and Co-Principal
Investigator of the Participatory Research Understanding Drugs study
(PROUD).

While many healthcare outlets pride themselves on having a harm-reduction
philosophy, their substance-use policies sometimes tell a different story.
Dr. Bernie Pauly partnered with clinical program leads at a large urban
hospital to look at ways to reduce barriers to hospital care for people who
use illicit substances. Pauly and her team worked closely with hospital
staff and people who use drugs to design research questions, collect data
and examine relevant policies. Dr.Pauly and Jane McCall will speak about
this project, how it resulted in the hospital changing its substance-use
policies, and what that looks like today.

*Summit Theme: Undoing Stigma*
Gay and bisexual men are deeply affected by overlapping stigmas: sexuality
and HIV and a range of others like gender nonconformity, race, and
disability. Fortunately, our communities have been a resolute source of
resistance against these challenges. But we still have a lot to learn about
stigma: its vocabulary, its impact on gay and bisexual men's health, our
resilience in spite of it, and the potential we have for intervention. At
this year's Summit we will focus on stigma's impact on gay men's health and
the theory and practice of undoing stigma.
Join us for another stimulating event with a lineup of guests whose
interest is gay men and stigma from multiple perspectives.
*Featured Speakers*
This year's Summit features Dr. Mark Hatzenbuehler of the Mailman School of
Public Health, Columbia University, and Dr. Evan Adams, Chief Medical
Officer of the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA).

For all intents and purposes, Bradford McIntyre's story could be a movie.
Thirty-one years ago, during the height of the AIDS (Acquired
Immunodeficiency Syndrome) crisis, he was diagnosed with HIV (Human
Immunodeficiency Virus). A year later, the doctors told him he had 6 months
to live. This is a story of being given a death sentence, of enduring pain
and self-imposed isolation but it is also a story of personal growth and
making a difference. A difference that has been acknowledged with the Queen
Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012, for excellence in the field of
HIV/AIDS, in Canada, and the Pride Legacy Award in 2013, for Sexual Health
& HIV/AIDS Awareness. Today, Bradford is an HIV/AIDS advocate, happily
married to the love of his life and has given hope to thousands of people
living with HIV around the world. The most intriguing part of his story is
how Bradford decided to give purpose to his journey by speaking about his
illness and sharing with others his experience. continue reading

HIV testing in parts of Canada remains based on "perceived risk" and could
be keeping people living with the disease from discovering their status. A new
study, based on the largest Canadian database of people living with HIV,
finds nearly half of those surveyed started antiretroviral treatment (ART)
when they had already reached an AIDS-defining illness or a weakened immune
system.
The study found that:
- From 2000 to 2012, 48% started ART with low CD4 counts, the indicator
of a weakened immune system.
- Focusing on the time period between 2008 and 2012, 68% of participants
initiated ART when the immune system was already weakened.
- Women, older adults, and individuals who inject drugs are among those
more likely to start treatment late.
- Over the study period, there was a shift towards earlier treatment
initiation, reflective of more modern treatment guidelines and better
treatment options.
