Subject: The United States' National Women and Girls HIV and AIDS Awareness
Day (NWGHAAD): A Global Perspective
To: Karen Marcinczyk <gigicatraoine at gmail.com>
Dear phenomenal women of ICWNA:
Today, March 10, 2015, is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
(NWGHAAD) in the United States.
As global organizations, ICW, and ICWNA in particular, recognize that many
of the issues women living with HIV around the world face are shared by our
sisters in the United States. In the United States, women living with HIV
are striving to overcome HIV criminalization, issues of healthcare access,
stigma, violence, gender equality, economic justice and more.
These issues, while universal, also affect each woman living with HIV
throughout the United States in unique ways. For example, transwomen face
many levels of stigma both within the healthcare environment and in the
community. Women living with HIV in the southern United States face a
myriad of unique issues secondary to increasing diagnoses,
politically-based healthcare access limitations and stigma-related and/or
geographical isolation for those in remote, rural areas. Women living with
HIV who are sex workers, or those using drugs are all but invisible as they
may be reluctant to disclose vital details to healthcare providers, again
due to stigma. Stigma is all too often serious
healthcare access variable.
Furthermore, it is also important to acknowledge that many women living
with HIV often overlap many different stigmatized or marginalized
communities. This further compounds the effect of these challenges and more.
On this NWGHAAD, let us all support women and girls living with HIV in the
United States as they fight to improve life for themselves and each other.
In celebration and support, I encourage all ICWNA members of both the
United States and Canada to check out the very inspiring NWGHAAD posts from
our sisters of PWN-USA. The words and stories of these strong American
women will reach the hearts of every woman living with HIV throughout our
shared continent.Link:
