Hi Ronda,
I see no-one has attempted to responded to your questions, so I will try to
fill you in.
Keep in mind that this is my perspective.
1) ViVA has non-profit and charitable status through our affiliation with
Positive Living Society as we are now a Standing Committee within the
Society.
(that one was easy :)
2) ViVA is very much in alignment with organizations such as ICW and
PWN-USA, which are both member driven positive women's organizations.
Unfortunately our own provincial PWN is not member driven (an anomaly if
you look at PWN's globally - of which there are many) and therefore better
described as a service provider.
However it did seem like the logical place so ViVA did try to work under
the PWN umbrella for the first year but we didn't feel encouraged, nor
supported.
That said, ViVA women have diverse relationships with PWN and we need to
respect and validate each others choices. Some ViVA members do access
services and programs from PWN and some ViVA members will have absolutely
nothing to do with PWN because of the experiences they have had or
witnessed.
(The important thing is that we have each others backs/ we are women living
with HIV and we need to support each other)
After surviving 6 years or so as an unfunded, nebulous community ViVA
finally decided to take Positive Living Society up on their offer to become
a Standing Committee. It made sense since we are in alignment with Positive
Living's mandate as a member driven organization supporting the empowerment
of PLHIV.
I would be happy to give you more of the herstory of ViVA if you want to
talk on the phone sometime Ronda.
Thanks for the questions,
Margarite
