I know it is really irritating and insensitive of people and I agree for some it may be exactly what has already been mentioned here. I think too that it is sometimes a knee-jerk reaction to a surprising and perhaps uncomfortable situation … and not knowing how to respond or react. I don't think everyone reacts for the same reason and we should remember that we are now educated and we live this every day. We too should not judge others for their ignorance but, without shame or anger, simply be willing to educate those in need of enlightenment.
As a community, we have been somewhat forced, or perhaps gifted, to understand and happily so, that we are all human beings deserving of love and respect. It may take a little longer for the rest of society to see this.
Okay, climbing off my high horse now :)
Stay strong!

Wow, thanks for the compliment! She thought i was not overweight bc of my HIV. I have worked out for ever... i was once 210 lbs before i gave birth to my gift of life, Michaela who weighed 8lbs 11 ounces. I am in recovery, alchol and drug free over 13 yrs...and have been living with HIV coming up on 3 yrs in may...

Just recently i was back home on my reserve, and i was missing my weights. So i would go running for the cardio. Thing is, i always prior to my HIV would work out, and people would think it was because of my HIV, " I'm skinny'! ugh! I work out to be strong! In bc, i'm healthy looking, up north, i'm skinny! lol

> So true! I think people either want to know they are "safe" or there is a juicy story, ie. sex, drugs or rock and roll. I think it is even worse to ask a woman because they have no idea what kind of trauma may have led to her infection and that question could be making her re-live that traumatic stress. Then there is the whole judgement scenario ... depending on how you got it how "guilty" or how much you are to blame for your illness. None of which are respectful or helpful.
