were shocked to learn that
*a woman living with HIV was sentenced in Quebec to serve 10 months* in
prison for spitting on police officers after she called them to her house
for assistance. Legal Network policy analyst Cécile Kazatchkine and Liz
Lacharpagne from
COCQ-Sida<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001gmcJH4OiU4fxE4s5pDkR3wBI-Ypdw6NjFKvbxpp1WfYE2iML6QsPzvNHMQPv4dKWt0MOjScZYUwMQhAV4tz_hV2d4CWXN7s-Hdp0HGGid4eU4N_ma8F3pA==>wrote
a
*scathing critique* of the ruling in La
Presse<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001gmcJH4OiU4fgK4yuiRraPDA2FVuxPz2zgMauV7OelBi5ejr60sp72foaTuIsEz_OmlM3sl3p70mWFOSYxkCJqDsxYBrRcSICdrWHZHGNlshTjZOU5vgkaGEq5OQF4dqhTvm8UlBKzOtD_We7auZt-jNvD67BRr6DtIMeLbQL6FRfhFkJwxP5w63d0JR-2AMl-5toCft1OqEIXp1lhk-P1U46j5Ow0upGIhqetv0ASiGs8X_bUIXAiA==>.
The judge focused heavily on the accused's HIV-positive status, revealing
an ignorance of how HIV is, and is not, transmitted.

The ruling followed testimony from the police officers in question about
their fear of possible HIV infection and the effects of antiretroviral
medications taken as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Yet *PEP was not even
warranted* in the circumstances, according to the official guidance of the
Quebec health ministry<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001gmcJH4OiU4clXqHSxAte659LrvCljaO-RPGJUKST1OGnsmn00wy3W3B_rYIUxVVE_QOwWgGEtnXw_R8ixLcQbhyjHo60qAHEzR9fVzZ2vHB34ZIfiLS0gqjKC0NoGLEpe2ijjzLeTtt1v6_TJG_Cammrc4veQ115_5x533CLMH6r8H1aPtuADW1tKIS8Vm0qSDlfKMw6EWDAY5KupkbIMiUoYJF4oKxc>.
Such overreactions do nothing to help soothe fears about HIV but instead
only cause greater anxiety.
        *Police training and guidelines urgently required*

The need for better education and guidelines for police about HIV was also
highlighted in our recent
submissions<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001gmcJH4OiU4eWHgu34aQ1WAX5cnFJpF4gpbSlQo5th_3VrEHEmoW7MQTJG25lnxow5DwnRIn7iOdoaAjku99lgU5cv1SOJUmCNAPB8jsFBNHSGN9HNrCVgZhZiu_JAGDQKLmljDsK8EJMIsr0H-C3SjP6HjIalEckeMILiW9LYbKyfImKWrTMMeDMfFAjZ7fy5tRFoJf9eIdznkFoO8kfJG51UWObUj2fgRKebEVjPtyPDw1zSkvXhTFaZfdluc2C-bknw_Q0PFASdyfg797QBcibvaf6x64JfXR4gVyniOzlAWg9-vXjKp0ONEzhx31xRv9g3p7qOWht45tBJ-FxGJl40gS6EGI2z8H600bPqeSo-dcF0ULjGNr04mQxxs9C>,

COCQ-Sida<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001gmcJH4OiU4fxE4s5pDkR3wBI-Ypdw6NjFKvbxpp1WfYE2iML6QsPzvNHMQPv4dKWt0MOjScZYUwMQhAV4tz_hV2d4CWXN7s-Hdp0HGGid4eU4N_ma8F3pA==>,
ont publié *une critique cinglante* de ce jugement dans La
Presse<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001gmcJH4OiU4fgK4yuiRraPDA2FVuxPz2zgMauV7OelBi5ejr60sp72foaTuIsEz_OmlM3sl3p70mWFOSYxkCJqDsxYBrRcSICdrWHZHGNlshTjZOU5vgkaGEq5OQF4dqhTvm8UlBKzOtD_We7auZt-jNvD67BRr6DtIMeLbQL6FRfhFkJwxP5w63d0JR-2AMl-5toCft1OqEIXp1lhk-P1U46j5Ow0upGIhqetv0ASiGs8X_bUIXAiA==>.

conjoints<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001gmcJH4OiU4eWHgu34aQ1WAX5cnFJpF4gpbSlQo5th_3VrEHEmoW7MQTJG25lnxow5DwnRIn7iOdoaAjku99lgU5cv1SOJUmCNAPB8jsFBNHSGN9HNrCVgZhZiu_JAGDQKLmljDsK8EJMIsr0H-C3SjP6HjIalEckeMILiW9LYbKyfImKWrTMMeDMfFAjZ7fy5tRFoJf9eIdznkFoO8kfJG51UWObUj2fgRKebEVjPtyPDw1zSkvXhTFaZfdluc2C-bknw_Q0PFASdyfg797QBcibvaf6x64JfXR4gVyniOzlAWg9-vXjKp0ONEzhx31xRv9g3p7qOWht45tBJ-FxGJl40gS6EGI2z8H600bPqeSo-dcF0ULjGNr04mQxxs9C>(avec

abusive et le traitement inadéquat des accusations criminelles pour
