New CATIE Resources *The Positive Side* – Winter
2013<http://www.catie.ca/en/positiveside?i=160113&l=e&p=04>

In this issue of *The Positive Side, *we tackle how to get a good night’s
sleep, look at the history of AIDS in the movies, and provide expert advice
on how to manage your lipid levels. And we share stories, lots of stories:
We visit with two young people who were born with HIV, and how they have
been navigating school, a social life and health care. Our cover story is a
profile of Columbia-born Claudia Medina, who speaks openly about HIV,
sexuality and supporting PHAs. There are stories of tattoos, beach weddings
and meeting *Fashion Television* goddess Jeanne Beker at the 25th and final
AIDS fundraising gala *Fashion Cares*. So many stories and so many
insights! But would we expect anything less from the great people living
with HIV in this country? Absolutely not.
FAQ: What do women need to know about hepatitis
C?<http://www.hepcinfo.ca/en/node/2505?lang=en&level=i?i=160113&l=e&p=04>

This FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) offers basic hepatitis C information
specific to women and answers some common questions asked by women living
with the virus:

   - Does hepatitis C affect women differently than it does men?
   - Is hepatitis C treatment successful for women?
   - Does hepatitis C affect a woman’s reproductive or sexual health?
   - Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Are they safe?
   - How does menopause affect women with hepatitis C?

CATIE Updates CATIE launches multilingual hepatitis C awareness
campaign<http://orders.catie.ca/advanced_search_result.php?search_in_description=1&keywords=what+you+should+know&osCsid?i=160113&l=e&p=04>

Discover yourlanguage.hepcinfo.ca, a multilingual section of our website
that provides hepatitis C information in English, Simplified Chinese,
Tagalog, Punjabi and Urdu. The web section provides useful information in
all these languages, including PDFs of brochures intended for immigrants
and newcomers and service providers who work with them.

The web information is part of an Ontario-wide campaign to raise awareness
about hepatitis C in the province’s largest immigrant populations. The
campaign will also have print and web advertisements in community media, as
well as targeted radio public service announcements, throughout November
and January. The campaign also directs people to call the Toronto Public
Health’s AIDS and Sexual Health Infoline (1-800-668-2437) which can provide
counseling about HIV, hepatitis and sexual health in up to 16 languages and
provide information about testing sites within Ontario.

We thank the Hepatitis C Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Health and
Long-term Care for its support in this program.

For more information about the project or its resources, please contact
Hywel Tuscano: htuscano at catie.ca.
Highlights from our Partners Course on culturally appropriate care opens
for all health practitioners <http://www.hivnet.ubc.ca/2012/06/cme/>

The online course introduces the social, cultural and historical frameworks
for HIV health care in Aboriginal communities. The goal of the 1.5-hour
course is to provide training to improve frontline capacity and cultural
sensitivity for HIV diagnosis and treatment.

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) certified course is a joint effort
by the Canadian Medical Association and CIHR Canadian HIV Trials Network
(CTN) with critical input from the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network (CAAN).
Memorial University of Newfoundland developed the instructional design and
is responsible for accreditation and evaluation.

Invitation to join CAAN’s National Research Advisory Committee
<http://www.ohtn.on.ca/Images/didyouknow/dec4_12/NRAC.pdf>

The Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network (CAAN) is looking for individuals to
sit on its National Research Advisory Committee (NRAC). Since 2006, NRAC
has guided the research work of the CAAN Research and Policy Unit (RPU),
assuring that it undertakes and produces HIV & AIDS community-based
research that is methodologically-sound, culturally-appropriate, respectful
and relevant. NRAC will now be mandated to also oversee the work of the new
Aboriginal HIV & AIDS (AHA) Research Centre, housed at the CAAN RPU in
Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

All members of the National Research Advisory Committee will participate in
the committee for a term of two years during which time Terms of Reference
and a process to replace members will be finalized. Committee members will
be asked to draw from their past and continued involvement in the
Aboriginal and/or the community-based research community, to guide CAAN’s
research initiatives. CAAN is looking for members from Aboriginal
communities residing anywhere in Canada. The ability to communicate through
email and via Skype would be very helpful.

For more information, please contact:

   - Renee Masching, Director of Research and Policy reneem at cann.ca

CAAN seeks artists to create AHA Centre
logo<http://www.caan.ca/aha-center-logo-contest/>

The Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network (CAAN) is calling on artists to submit
proposed logos for its newly funded Aboriginal HIV and AIDS Community Based
Research Collaborative Centre (AHA Centre). They are looking for an
original logo that:

   - Represents all three Aboriginal groups in Canada (First Nations,
   Inuit, and Metis);
   - Indicates the AHA Centre is concerned with HIV and AIDS;
   - Indicates the Centre is focused on community-based research;
   - CAAN and the AHA Centre facilitate collaboration/networking.

CAAN and the AHA Centre will have ownership over the logo. All entries can
include the artist’s small signature or initials, preferably at the bottom
right of the design. Artist for the winning logo, selected by the AHA
Centre’s Governing Council, will receive $100.00. A profile of the artist
and their artwork will also appear on the organization’s website.

Deadline for entries is January, 30 2013. The winning artist will be
notified by phone. Please email all entries to patrickb at caan.ca as a JPEG
and remember to include your contact information.

The *HIV and AIDS in Canada: Surveillance Report to December 31,

in Canada by identifying trends among populations demarcated by sex, age
group, race/ethnicity, exposure category and geographical location, in
addition to reporting on mortality in Canada due to HIV/AIDS.
