Abbotsford flirts with harm reduction despite official policy against it

Pastor Ward Draper quotes Scripture and swears in the same breath.

He wears his clerical collar beneath a military-style black uniform as he
leads a congregation of addicts at a Saturday-night church service in
Abbotsford.

He dispenses communion — and crack pipes.

UNJUST SUPREME COURT RULING ON CRIMINALIZATION OF HIV MAJOR STEP BACKWARDS
FOR PUBLIC HEALTH AND HUMAN RIGHTS

*October 5, 2012* — As part of a coalition of interveners, the Positive
Living Society of BC is shocked and dismayed at today’s ruling by the
Supreme Court of Canada that says that either the responsible use of a
condom, or an undetectable viral load, does not protect a person living
with HIV from rampant prosecution. The Court’s judgments in R. v. Mabior
and R. v. D.C., two cases relating to the criminalization of HIV
non-disclosure, are a cold endorsement of AIDS-phobia. They will stand as
an impediment to public health and prevention, and add even more fuel to
stigma, misinformation and fear. And they place Canada once again in
shameful opposition to standards set out by international human rights
bodies, UNAIDS and the Global Commission on HIV and the Law.

UPDATE: Top court decision 'huge setback' - Unanimous ruling says condoms
no barrier to prosecution for HIV-positive people

Condom use is not enough.

In a blow to the HIV community, the test in criminal cases of nondisclosure
will now be "realistic possibility of transmission of HIV," a
clarification of the more vague "significant risk" test.

 R v. Mabior; R v. DC

*This is a guest post by Carissima
Mathen<http://www.commonlaw.uottawa.ca/en/carissima-mathen.html>,
who is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of
Ottawa.*

Having done an initial pass of the Supreme Court decisions issued today, my
main sentiment is….admiration (not least, for the unanimous opinion). I
think the Supreme Court has done its utmost to consider all sides, even if
I don’t necessarily agree with everything it said.

 The new face of AIDS

Rock Hudson in 1985, Eazy-E in 1995, Liberace in 1987 and Freddy Mercury in
1991 - all celebrities that were in the early wave of the AIDS epidemic.
Decades later, and there is still no cure.
Last week, drug company Gilead Sciences in California announced a complete
treatment regimen for HIV infection meant for people who have not already
received treatment with other drugs.
