[Viva] Possible Drug Interaction

On this topic, I had a drug interaction a few months ago that gave me an
important reminder:   

Every new drug you take (incl recreational)  should be checked with an HIV
experienced pharmacist to make sure there are no known interactions.  

I needed an injection of steriods into my spine last summer for a serious
back problem.  A few days later I experienced a terrible interaction that
lasted for several months .  All is well now but this could have been
avoided if the back specialist consulted with the HIV specialist or
pharmacist.  But unfortunately that's not how specialists work - they are in
their own little bubbles!    

I learned that I have to take responsibility for checking with a pharmacist
about any new drug I take.    Even  injections  - not just in the form of
pills. 

PS the problematic drug was RITONAVIR  which has MANY drug interactions, so
be especially on guard with this drug. Drugs that contain Ritonavir are:
atazanavir, lopinavir, darunavir.  

Remember doctors sometime miss details and make mistakes - as empowered
patients we need to be asking lots of questions!
