Wishing you all a healthy and happy World AIDS Day. In spite of the
Canadian government turning its back on the less fortunate by not passing
Bill C-398 and in spite of the enormous injustices in the world, I am
grateful we have the good health care we have and I am so grateful we have
this community of poz women.
Thank you all.....

Margarite

*1 December 2012, World AIDS Day.*
More Peace Less Aids Foundation at the OAS

By invitation of the OAS *Secretary General Mr. José Miguel Insulza,* the
President of the *More Peace Less Aids (MPLA) Foundation* and former
President of ICW Global, *Patricia Perez,* accompanied by the *Argentine
Representative to the OAS Martín Gómez Bustillo*, presented the campaign
MPLA in Washington D.C. to the *Plenary of the OAS Permanent Council.
*Experts focused on the challenges in the protection of the human rights of
women living with HIV and AIDS, the work that regional and international
organizations are doing in this area and the policy recommendations to
promote and protect their human rights.
The organization’s *Secretary for External Relations, Ambassador Alfonso
Quiñonez* inaugurated the meeting, moderated by the Executive Secretary of
the Inter-American Commission of Women *(CIM), Ambassador Carmen Moreno. *The
roundtable started with the presentation of the President of MPLA
Foundation, Patricia Pérez, who said that the real issue underlying is not
medical-scientific, but political, and called for putting the issue back on
the international political agenda.

In the morning session Perez called *"to install the issue of AIDS and
human rights of women on the regional political agenda" and* acknowledged
the support of the OAS, which was formalized after the intervention of
several Permanent Representatives who assigned great importance to the
topic of AIDS and human rights in the development of the countries of the
hemisphere, *"I leave this house of the Americas with the emotion of
knowing that I have been heard by political leaders who have demonstrated
sensitivity to understand the relationship between peace and aids. With
political leadership we have a great possibility to address the pandemic in
the Americas using peace as a formidable instrument"* *Perez said.*

At the table were addressed other challenges including poor access to
antiretroviral medicine; lack of specific pediatric treatment formulas;
discrimination; homophobia; and lack of respect for the freedom of choice
of these women
Meanwhile, the Regional Prevention Advisor of the HIV Project of the Pan
American Health Organization *(PAHO), Sonja Caffe*, spoke about inequality
in the countries of the hemisphere in terms of access to health care, and
especially the importance of identifying the barriers that prevent
promoting gender equality in the right to health.
Finally, the Director of *Development Connections, Dinys Luciano,* remarked
on the need to work on a comprehensive sex education and acknowledged some
gaps in this regard, such as the low participation of these women in
political decision-making spheres of the countries of the Americas, the
lack of documentation and impunity.
