Hi ViVA women,
Read the article "Advocates seek 30% of US HIV funding for women"
The woman they are referring to, Naina Khanna, is a positive woman from the
US that I met in Mexico city at the IAC 2008. She is an amazing, smart young
woman that is part of WORLD (out of Oakland California) and the coordinator
of the US PWN ( a National positive women's network).
I mention this article because I really like the actions they took to bring
attention to the lack of funding for women's programing.

 Gym Membership

Want to feel better, look better and have more energy?

The health benefits of regular exercise are hard to ignore, but it can be
especially beneficial for people living with HIV. Increased muscle mass,
lower bad cholesterol levels, improved blood sugar control, bone
strengthening, increased energy and improved immune system are just a few
known effects.

People who exercise often have higher CD4 cell counts and fewer side effects
from HIV and HIV drugs, but speak to your healthcare provider about what
types of exercise are OK for you.

Let us help you commit to being fit. Corporate-rate gym membership is
available for all POSITIVE LIVING BC Members and Associate Members at *Steve
Nash Fitness World* <http://www.stevenashfitnessclubs.com>.

 Remembering the Dr. Peter Diaries

Twenty years ago, CBC television broadcast the Dr. Peter Diaries - a
touching, honest, and deeply personal account of young physician Dr. Peter
Jepson-Young's experience with HIV/AIDs. At a time when too few knew the
difference between myth and medical reality, his story brought a human face
to the epidemic.

>From September 7 - 17, in commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of the Dr.
Peter Diaries, CBC Radio One's The Early Edition will be dedicating a
special series to examine the changing face of HIV/AIDS.

Grannies cycle to aid peers in Africa

Grandmothers and grandothers from around Vancouver Island will bike 280
kilometres in support of their African peers this weekend.

The Victoria Grandmothers for Africa's fifth annual tour from Campbell River
to Victoria is Friday to Sunday. Funds support African grandmothers who are
the sole caregivers for their grandchildren, orphaned by HIV/AIDS. "*I feel
kind of like a racehorse at the gate,*" said first-time rider Joanne Egan,
62, who has been training since April.

Over the past four tours, the Grandmothers have raised a total of $150,000,
which will assist the grandmothers with school fees, uniforms, food and
medicine.

 Herpes charges ‘law run amok’

How far should lawmakers go to protect people from being infected with
conditions like herpes while having unprotected sex?

A charge of aggravated assault laid recently against a man with HV-2 genital
herpes has raised concern among legal experts.

James David Hogg, 35, of Toronto allegedly had consensual, but unprotected,
sex with a 28-year-old woman on March 8, 2011, while knowing he had genital
herpes.

Det. Greg Forestall told the Toronto Star that he felt he had enough
evidence to lay a charge after consulting a crown attorney.* “If you don’t
disclose it’s called exposure without disclosure,”* he said. The detective
said that although the disease is not fatal the harm it can cause is
substantial because there is no known cure for herpes and the victim is
subject to *“lifelong suffering,”* Forestall said.

More communication needed for HIV trials:study

The fight against HIV requires human vaccine trials in at-risk communities,
but researchers aren't doing enough to gain the trust of potential
participants, a new study suggests.

In a paper published in the American Journal of Public Health, University of
Toronto researchers argue people in high-risk communities have
misconceptions about vaccine trials that make them wary about participating.

The study stems from interviews with nine focus groups in high-risk
communities in Toronto and Ottawa after a major international HIV trial was
cancelled before completion in 2009.

*"We found that there is a general altruism towards HIV vaccine trials in
these communities, and a feeling that people should participate 'for the
greater good,'" *said lead author Peter A. Newman, professor at U of T's
Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work.

 All my little Band-Aids

When Hamilton-based artist Andrew McPhail began working on little sculptures
made of Band-Aids, he wasn’t entirely convinced anything solid would come
from it. At least, not until he heard about a young Muslim girl in
Mississauga who was strangled to death by her father for refusing to wear
her hijab to school.

He started thinking about the idea of the hijab and the burka – their
physical forms, and what they represent – and was struck with the poignancy
of the young girl’s failed struggle to live as an unmasked individual. He
could immediately relate.

McPhail has been living with HIV since 1993 and has often felt his own
identity has been defaced by the illness.

Advocates Seek 30% of US HIV Funding for Women

Two demonstrations at the 2011 National HIV Prevention Conference in Atlanta
focus attention on the needs of women.

Sponsored by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and 40
other public and private agencies, the 2011 National HIV Prevention
Conference was held August 14 to 17 in Atlanta. More than 3,000 public
health workers and community leaders attended.

Among the topics discussed were treatment as prevention for both
HIV-negative people and those living with the virus, as well as the recent
CDC data showing a continuous rise of HIV cases among gay and bisexual men,
especially young African-American men.

Also discussed was high-impact prevention. This new approach to HIV
prevention by the CDC focuses on programs that have demonstrated the
greatest potential in high-risk groups and implements them on a scale large
enough to yield the greatest possible impact.

A victory for Novartis could spell death for millions

A case being heard in the Indian Supreme Court on Tuesday could signal a
death sentence for Loon Gangte.

Mr. Gangte is not accused of any crime. But he — and thousands of other HIV
positive people — will be avidly following the Supreme court's hearing of
the Novartis vs Union of India, Cancer Patients Aid Association & others,
because if the Swiss pharmaceutical giant wins its case, the drugs that keep
Mr. Gangte alive could become too expensive for him.* “For us, it's about
life and death,”* Mr. Gangte said on the eve of the hearing.* “We can't let
them win.”*

 Google Honors Freddie Mercury

Freddie Mercury would have turned 65 years old on September 5. To honor the
occasion, Google created a special version of its logo (a.k.a. "Google
Doodle") on its search engine homepage.

The logo was online on September 5 worldwide, except for the United States
in respect for Labor Day. The logo was online in the United States on
September 6.

When users click on the logo, it starts a live-action doodle set to "Don't
Stop Me Now," a 1978 hit for Queen, the band that he fronted.

25 percent Of Americans still believe HIV can be transmitted by sharing a
drinking glass

A *newly released
study<http://www.thinkprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/HIV-AIDS-Public-Opinion.pdf>
* by the Kaiser Family Foundation shows that the public’s understanding of
HIV has hardly changed in 20 years. One out of four Americans still
mistakenly believes that HIV can be transmitted by sharing a drinking glass:

And though comfort levels have increased over the past 15 years, the stigma
against people living with HIV/AIDS is still incredibly severe. Only half
the population would be “very comfortable” having a coworker with HIV or
AIDS, and the comfort level numbers decline for teachers, roommates, and
cooks.
