*Bill C-393 is currently before the Senate and is first scheduled for debate
on Monday, March 21st.   *With the threat of election looming, Bill C-393
runs the risk of dying in the Senate if our Senators do not pass it before
the Governor General declares an election.  *The Senate can pass this
humanitarian bill within a matter of days – but only if there is enough
political will to do so.*  We have confirmed that Liberal Senators will
support the bill itself and passing it quickly.  We are unsure of *what the
Conservative government will do in the Senate since it opposed the bill in
the House – even just stalling in the Senate would likely have the effect of
killing the bill because time would run out to pass it before an election is
called.*

Now we need to keep up the pressure or else the bill could die on the Order
Paper if an election is called, which may be very soon.

*WHAT YOU CAN DO: *

*There are 2 types of actions we are asking you take TODAY:*

*1.   We need you to contact the Senators listed below between NOW and
Tuesday, March 22nd, *and urge them to respect the will of the Canadian
people, as represented by the House of Commons, and pass Bill C-393 without
unnecessary delays.

*ACT NOW: Please make your phone calls by the end of the day on TUESDAY,
MARCH 22ND.*

ask that you call 2 members of the Senate Standing Committee on Banking,

these individuals have the power to pass Bill C-393 without delay.

*Le Projet de loi C-393 est présentement au Sénat; un premier débat est
prévu le lundi 21 mars. *À la veille d’une possible élection, le Projet de
loi C-393 risque de s’éteindre si nos sénateurs ne l’adoptent pas avant que
le gouverneur général déclenche une élection. *Le Sénat peut adopter ce
projet de loi humanitaire en quelques jours – mais seulement s’il en a la
volonté politique.* Nous avons la confirmation que les sénateurs libéraux
appuieront le projet de loi et son adoption rapide.  *Toutefois, nous ne
savons pas comment le gouvernement conservateur agira au Sénat, puisqu’il
s’était opposé au projet de loi en Chambre. Un simple retardement risquerait
de dérailler le projet de loi, car on manquerait de temps pour l’adopter
avant le déclenchement d’une élection.*

Il faut à présent maintenir la pression, puisque le projet de loi pourrait
échouer ou mourir au feuilleton dans l’éventualité d’une élection – ce qui
risque de se produire très bientôt.
