*2) What’s new at CATIE? *

*a) A new issue of The Positive Side <http://www.positiveside.ca/>*

In this special 10-year anniversary issue, we catch up with the HIV-positive
people who have appeared on the cover. Their stories are varied and
surprising. We also turn to life with HIV outside of Canada’s largest
cities, while other articles look at bone health and vaginal health. We tell
you about programs for HIV-positive families and feature the beautiful bead
work of Vancouver-based Aboriginal artist Ron Horsefall.

Interested in learning from the experiences of other frontline service
providers? Check out CATIE’s *Programming
Connection<http://www2.catie.ca/en/pc/programming-connection>

Canada. We’ve added a new case study “*Around the Kitchen
Table<http://www2.catie.ca/en/pc/program/around-kitchen-table>
*” on incorporating indigenous traditions into HIV, STI and hepatitis
prevention education in Aboriginal communities by drawing on the strengths
of women as natural leaders in their communities.

*d*) *HIV in Canada** report now updated
*<http://www.catie.ca/pdf/Canada/HIV-in-Canada_ES.pdf>

*HIV in Canada: Trends and issues that affect HIV prevention, care,
treatment and support
<http://www.catie.ca/pdf/Canada/HIV-in-Canada_ES.pdf>*has been
updated. The report provides an extensive overview of the HIV
landscape in Canada, including: the epidemiology of HIV; trends in diseases
related to HIV; and trends and issues in prevention, treatment, care and
support for people with or at risk for HIV. The report provides starting
points for dialogue among stakeholders in HIV in order to support strategic
HIV/AIDS planning and decision-making in Canada.

*e) TreatmentUpdate 183*

*TreatmentUpdate 183* <http://www.catie.ca/tu.nsf> reviews recent advances
in organ transplantation among people with HIV. Highlights include:

   - An overview on organ transplantation, drugs used in the procedure and
   possible complications
   - Kidney transplants in patients with HIV in the United States
   - Overview of sirolimus (rapamycin), its applications in liver
   transplants and HIV infection
   - Adjusting tacrolimus dose with HIV treatment
   - Liver transplants for liver cancer in HIV infection* *

*f)** Sociobehavioral issues of NPTs*
The new report* Sociobehavioral Issues of New Prevention
Technologies<http://www2.catie.ca/sites/default/files/pdf/NPT%20sociobehavioral_EN.pdf>
* presents a review of the literature on five biomedical approaches to HIV
prevention: post-exposure prophylaxis, pre-exposure prophylaxis, treatment
as prevention, microbicides and vaccines. It focuses on the
socio-behavioural issues involved with these technologies, including issues
of awareness, acceptability, access and adherence. It outlines guidelines
for the implementation of new prevention technologies as well as suggestions
on how to market the technologies.

*g) Partial efficacy and the uptake of NPTs*

The new report *Partial Efficacy and the Uptake of New Prevention
Technologies <http://www.catie.ca/pdf/NPTPartialEfficacy-EN.pdf>* looks at
how new HIV prevention technologies will likely offer only partial
protection from HIV. This raises two questions: *How should their use be
promoted?* and *What is the best way to communicate the idea of partial
protection while emphasizing the continued need to use established
strategies?*

This review investigates how the issue of partial efficacy has been managed
in the context of other prevention technologies—such as vaccines, measures
to prevent malaria, and devices that protect people in case of accidents—and
highlights potential lessons for communicating about HIV prevention
technologies.

*h) Learning Tactics and Strategies from ACT UP: *
Sarah Schulman in conversation with Susan Cole, Book and Arts Editor, Now
Magazine.

Sarah Schulman, novelist and co-director of the ACT UP ORAL HISTORY PROJECT,
will speak about how and why ACT UP (the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power)
was effective in forcing governments and societies to change their views and
response to AIDS. What can contemporary activists learn about how to be
effective and build movements? Sarah will show a short sneak preview of Jim
Hubbard's new feature film, UNITED IN ANGER: A History of ACT UP –scheduled
world premiere winter 2012.

*Environments of Nurturing Safety (EONS): Aboriginal Women in Canada Five
Year Strategy on HIV and AIDS (2010-2015)*
Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network, 2010
This publication was developed in consultation with a diverse group of
approximately 300 Aboriginal women from communities and regions across
Canada. The commitment and strong voices of the women that contributed to
this process are woven within this document; each voice spoke strongly about
the need for addressing the impacts of HIV and AIDS in the lives of
Aboriginal women. They also address the immediate need to create a response
that will change outcomes for Positive Aboriginal Women (PAW) and change the
trend of Aboriginal women being most vulnerable to becoming HIV-positive.
This strategy demands the creation of ‘environments of nurturing safety’ for
Aboriginal women to continue and/or begin healing journeys.

*Strengthening Community-Based Approaches to HIV/AIDS and STI Screening,
Treatment & Prevention among Aboriginal People in the Atlantic Region*
Healing Our Nations, 2011
It is essential that key stakeholders work with Aboriginal communities to
identify the gaps in HIV/STI screening, treatment and prevention so that
issues can be approached with sensitivity and caution, ensuring that
Aboriginal communities are centrally involved in the design and
implementation of HIV/STI services. Through a sexual health workshop with
community members from the Atlantic region, clinicians, academics and
members of government and Aboriginal organizations, several themes
pertaining to HIV/AIDS and STI screening, treatment and prevention emerged:
accessibility, communication, culturally appropriate services, awareness,
collaboration, normalization, confidentiality, support and prevention.
