July 12, 2011****

** **

Dear Executive Director (and allies): ****

** **

Warm greetings (definitely warmer than much of our “summer” weather (!)). *
***

** **

I am very pleased to write to you, to announce the latest addition to our
staff team. Effective July 11, 2011, Sara O’Shaughnessy assumed the position
of PAN Community-Based Research Manager (CBR) for BC. ****

** **

Sara will be working for and with each of you, the PAN member organizations,
to help inform a vision for community-based research here in this province J.
In doing this work, Sara will be working alongside other important
stakeholders, including (but not limited to): with Terry Howard, BC’s CIHR
CBR Facilitator (housed out of the Positive Living BC Society); with
academic researchers; with public health agencies; with policy makers; and
with government representatives. ****

** **

And of course, in the spirit of community-based research, Sara will also be
connecting with people living with HIV/AIDS (PHAs) and folks who are “at
risk”, to help inform her work plan and program activities. ****

** **

And just what will those activities be? They will include: seeking out
funding opportunities for new CBR projects here in BC; supporting existing
CBR projects as appropriate; providing training, education and capacity
building opportunities on CBR; helping to promote communication and
collaboration across the different sectors (i.e. PHA’s, PAN member and
allied organizations, academics, researchers and peer researchers, etc.);
coordinating the quarterly “CBR in BC” meetings; and also helping to support
PAN’s overall vision, mandate and activities. Ultimately, the ideal is that
Sara will work as strategically as possible, to support community-based
research activities that will ultimately contribute to real and meaningful
changes for PHAs and the community-based organizations that support them. In
other words, pursuing activities that result in policy or other changes that
make a real difference to people and organizations “on the ground”. ****

** **

This newest staffing position at PAN is the result of an exciting
partnership between PAN and the CIHR Centre for REACH in HIV/AIDS (
www.centreforreach.ca). This means that Sara will also be working to have
her eye on the “bigger picture”, in terms of how CBR here in BC also fits
into and supports the national scene. ****

** **

*Whew*. Well, yes, Sara will definitely have her work cut out for her! ….but
she brings lots of passion and enthusiasm to this position…below, a few
words from Sara herself: ****

** **

*I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as PAN’s new
Community-Based Research Manager. I am excited to be joining the PAN team
and to work with the member organizations to develop a dynamic provincial
CBR strategy. For those of you I have not yet met, here is a little bit of
background information to help you get to know me:*

* *

*Originally from Winnipeg, I obtained a Masters in Environmental Studies at
York University in 2005 and recently completed a PhD in Rural Sociology at
the University of Alberta. In 2009, I received a Certificate in Qualitative
Research Methods from the International Institute of Qualitative
Methodology. I have been fortunate to work on community-based research
projects in a number of different communities around the globe – from Fort
McMurray in northern Alberta to Fort Portal in western Uganda. I am
delighted to now call beautiful British Columbia home.*

* *

*I am thrilled to be at PAN, to be joining an organization that is dynamic
and taking on new challenges and opportunities in the CBR realm. I am
looking forward to working alongside each of you and getting your thoughts
and input into my new position. I am very keen to meet you all at PAN’s fall
conference in Richmond, and in particular at the CBR event, “Looking
Forward, Standing Together: A Provincial Strategy for Community-Based
Research in BC”, being planned for September 13th. *

* *

*Towards that end, just a heads up that I hope to connecting with some of
you in early August (your schedules permitting), to do some quick phone
interviews and get some ideas to help make the most of our collective time
together in September!*

* *

Sara can be reached via email at: sara at pacificaidsnetwork.org, or at (604)
910.4125. Like the rest of the PAN staff (myself, Stacy and Heidi) Sara is
presently working virtually from her home (White Rock, BC). However, to let
you know we are working on finding an office space for Sara in downtown
Vancouver (and possibly housing some other CBR folks in the same location)
and will keep you informed as things develop. ****

** **

I guess that is all for now, other than saying I hope that you will join me
in welcoming Sara to PAN, to working in the field of HIVAIDS and moreover,
to the province of BC J.****

** **

Yours most truly, ****

** **

** **
