Research (CBR) Program:

Led by the CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity, the CIHR HIV/AIDS
Research Initiative offers ongoing funding opportunities for both new and
experienced investigators across the spectrum of HIV/AIDS research. As part
of this effort, the CIHR HIV/AIDS Community-Based Research Program assists
community-based organizations, non-governmental organizations and
institutions in developing the knowledge necessary to carry out their

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to support the development of
partnerships between communities and researchers to facilitate the conduct
of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community-based research.

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are a) to help ensure a
reliable supply of highly qualified personnel to develop knowledge in the
fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic through community-based research and b)
to provide recognition and support to students who are pursuing a Master's
degree in a community-based research field related to HIV/AIDS in Canada.

3. Social Aetiology of Mental Illness CIHR Research Fellowships, Toronto,
Canada

The Social Aetiology of Mental Illness Training Program announces its call
for applications for the 2011 - 2012 research fellowships. The Social
Aetiology of Mental Illness Training Program is based at the Centre for
Addiction and Mental Health and the University of Toronto, and includes
international partners from across the globe. It is the first centre of
excellence for the study of the social determinants of mental health and
addictions problems and issues.

Research fellowships are for one year, fully funded, research-based, and
will help top-class research students further develop their skills in
investigating the social aetiology of mental illness. Applications from
self-funded persons also will be considered.

The minimum requirement to apply is to hold a Master's degree in a relevant
area or an MD with research training/experience. Fellows cannot be enrolled
full time in an academic program by the start of the 10-week didactic
training course that begins the SAMI program the second Monday in September.

4. Update: CIHR HIV/AIDS Community-Based Research (CBR) Consultation Process

In 2010, CIHR launched a two part consultation (web-based survey and key
informant interviews) to complete its response to the major CIHR HIV/AIDS
Community-Based Research (CBR) Program Evaluation<
http://www.cihr.gc.ca/e/40021.html> which was released in Fall 2009.
 Through this most recent consultation process, the primary focus was a
review of the current suite of funding mechanisms available in the Program
with a specific emphasis on capacity building.  Approximately 50 people
responded to an online survey and 26 key informants were interviewed, with
an excellent cross-section of community, academic, Aboriginal and General
stream members participating.

Armed with this information, a Report was drafted in December 2010 which is
now been reviewed by the members of the CIHR HIV/AIDS CBR Steering
Committee<http://www.cihr.gc.ca/e/40943.html>.  Over the coming months, the
Steering Committee will guide the implementation of recommendations in
keeping with the goal of continually meeting the changing needs of the
community.  As these subtle changes are implemented over the coming years,
it should be noted the primary elements of the current CBR funding program –
catalyst and operating grants to support new research, programs to support
the next generation of CBR academics, and supports for community
capacity-building – will remain an integral part of the Program moving
forward.

Once the Steering Committee has completed its review of the Report, it will
be promptly shared with the entire CBR community and posted on the CIHR
website.  Of course, your ongoing input on how to improve the CBR Program

L'Institut des maladies infectieuses et immunitaires est responsable au nom
des IRSC de l'Initiative de recherche sur le VIH/sida des IRSC et permet

La présente possibilité de financement « Subventions Catalyseur : Recherche
communautaire sur le VIH/sida » est offerte dans le cadre du Programme de
recherche communautaire sur le VIH/sida, en partenariat avec l'Institut de
la santé des Autochtones des IRSC. Comme c'est le cas pour toutes
possibilités offertes dans le cadre du Programme de recherche communautaire
sur le VIH/sida, les fonds pour cette possibilité sont disponibles dans deux
volets de financement distincts : autochtone et général.

l'équipe de l'état de la recherche en santé qui contribueront à l'avancement
de la recherche qui s'inscrit dans le mandat des IRSC et des instituts,
initiatives ou directions pertinents des IRSC.
Le montant maximal accordé par subvention est de 25 000 $.

3. Bourses de recherche des IRSC sur l’étiologie sociale de la maladie
mentale, Toronto, Canada

Le Programme de formation en étiologie sociale de la maladie mentale (ESMM)
lance son appel de demandes pour les bourses de recherche 2011-2012. Ce
programme, établi au Centre de toxicomanie et de santé mentale et à
l’Université de Toronto, réunit des partenaires des quatre coins du globe.
Il s’agit du premier centre d’excellence voué à l’étude des déterminants de
la maladie mentale et des problèmes de dépendance.

Les bourses, d’une durée d’un an, aideront les meilleurs étudiants en
recherche à développer leurs compétences dans l’étude de l’étiologie sociale
de la maladie mentale. Les demandes de candidats autofinancés sont aussi
admissibles.

Les candidats doivent au moins détenir une maîtrise dans un domaine
pertinent ou un doctorat en médecine assorti d’expérience ou de formation en
recherche. Les boursiers ne pourront être inscrits à temps plein dans un
programme universitaire au début du cours de dix semaines qui inaugure le
Programme de formation en ESMM, le deuxième lundi de septembre.

4.  Le point sur le processus de consultation relative au Programme de
recherche communautaire (RC) sur le VIH/sida des IRSC

En 2010, les IRSC ont lancé un processus de consultation en deux parties
(sondage en ligne et entrevues avec des informateurs clés) pour compléter
leur réponse à l’importante Évaluation du Programme de recherche
communautaire sur le VIH/sida<http://www.cihr.gc.ca/f/40021.html> des IRSC
publiée à l’automne 2009. L’objectif principal de ces plus récentes
consultations était d’examiner les mécanismes de financement offerts dans le
cadre du Programme, en mettant l’accent sur le développement des capacités.
Une cinquantaine de répondants ont participé à un sondage en ligne et 26
informateurs clés ont été interrogés, ces personnes constituant un ensemble
très représentatif des volets communautaire, universitaire, autochtone et
général de la recherche.

Un rapport produit en décembre 2010 à la lumière de cette information est
actuellement soumis à l’examen du comité directeur de la RC sur le VIH/sida<
http://www.cihr.gc.ca/f/40943.html>. Au cours des prochains mois, le comité
directeur guidera la mise en œuvre des recommandations du rapport avec
l’objectif de continuellement s’adapter à l’évolution des besoins de la
communauté. À mesure que ces changements subtils seront introduits au cours
des prochaines années, il est à noter que les principaux éléments du
programme de RC actuel – subventions Catalyseur/de fonctionnement pour
soutenir la nouvelle recherche, programmes pour soutenir la prochaine
génération de chercheurs universitaires en RC et soutien au développement
des capacités communautaires – continueront de faire partie intégrante du
Programme.
Une fois que le comité directeur aura complété son examen du rapport,
celui-ci sera partagé sans tarder avec toute la communauté de RC et affiché
dans le site Web des IRSC. Bien entendu, nous accueillons toujours avec
plaisir vos idées pour améliorer le Programme de RC, et nous vous
