Public health experts recommend that HIV positive women in resource-limited
countries should breastfeed their babies. Women in industrialized countries
who are on effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) and have undetectable
viral load should also be advised that breastfeeding may be an acceptable
option, according to an opinion piece by Pamela Morrison, an international
board-certified lactation consultant, and colleagues in the August 5, 2011,
advance online edition of AIDS.****

Pathogens May Change, But Fear Is the
Same<http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/16/health/16epidemics.html>
August 15, 2011****

In “House on Fire: The Fight to Eradicate
Smallpox<http://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/disease/smallpox/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier>,”
Dr. William H. Foege, one of the conquerors of the virus, describes a
grotesque moment in the war: The last victim in Benin, in West Africa, is
visited by several “fetisheurs” — witch doctors — seeking to harvest his
scabs. For a fee, fetisheurs performed inoculations, a medical practice
common in Africa for centuries. Into a small cut in the arm of a healthy
person, they would rub in a victim’s powdered scabs. (The inoculee had about
a 2 percent risk of dying, but a typical African epidemic was about 25
percent lethal.)****

Mobilized Against AIDS <http://nyti.ms/pmnhEC> by Dr. Agnes Binagwaho,

August 22, 2011****

Your article painted a false picture of all Africans as fatalistic victims
of the virus, instead of activists who are building the global movement to
demand access to the fruits of modern medicine. Rwandans are in no way
resigned.****

****

August 5, 2011****

There is now strong evidence that preventive oral antiretroviral therapy can
moderately reduce likelihood of HIV infection. This concept is called HIV
pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Premature closures of some previous PrEP
clinical trials, secondary to ethical concerns, did not stop research. We
