Political commitment is key to the success of HIV programmes and African
leaders have been at the forefront of the fight against HIV on the
continent, but politicians also have the power to harm HIV/AIDS campaigns.**

August 2, 2011****

Thirty years ago, an HIV diagnosis was a death sentence. Today that fear has
diminished, only to be replaced by new fears. People living with HIV face
increasing stigma from society, a sense of isolation and the possibility of
prosecution for trying to live intimate, sexual lives.****

The first field trial for a “lab on a chip” accurately detected both HIV and
syphilis among a Rwandan population, researchers reported Sunday. Blood
samples injected into the clear plastic, credit card-shaped device produced
results within 20 minutes. This kind of test could offer a faster, cheaper
and easier way to detect infectious diseases that afflict developing
countries, according to the report published

Country ownership and capacity development central in moving forward the
response to AIDS<http://www.unaids.org/en/resources/presscentre/featurestories/2011/july/20110729capacitybuilding/>
****

July 29, 2011****

In the past decade, increased commitment and funding has enabled countries
to boost their HIV responses. However, many of the gains remain fragile as
countries face challenges to take charge of their own AIDS responses.
Following the High Level Meeting on AIDS where world leaders agreed on bold
targets, UNAIDS convened a workshop in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to strengthen
investments in capacity development of six sub-Saharan African
countries—Benin, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria and Swaziland.****

sida<http://www.unaids.org/fr/resources/presscentre/featurestories/2011/july/20110729capacitybuilding/>
****

29 juillet 2011****

As a result of an advocacy meeting we held in Amsterdam earlier this year,
the *Global Fund Advocates Network (GFAN) *has been established to unite
voices and efforts from all over the world in support of adequate funding
for the Global Fund. We would like to consult you on the goals, objectives
and activities as currently planned for GFAN and would much appreciate your
feedback by responding to the online survey:

*Announcement of selected candidate for the position of communications focal
point for the developed country NGO delegation to the Global Fund board*

The selection committee is pleased to announce the selected candidate:
 *Kataisee
Richardson (Canada)*, Program Officer, International Council of AIDS Service
Organizations (ICASO). Kataisee has extensive experience working on human
rights issues particularly around women, youth, and HIV. ICASO focuses most
of its support on organizations in developing countries, including a broad
range of AIDS service organizations, community-based organizations, health
networks, representatives, advocates, and activists, particularly the most
vulnerable and marginalized. Kataisee has been working on civil society
involvement in the Global Fund as Focal Point for the Civil Society Action
Team (CSAT), which aims to strengthen civil society organizations’ capacity
to be more effectively involved in programs supported primarily by the
Global Fund. She has worked a number of years in South Africa, has excellent
organizational skills, and is fluent in English and French.****

** **

We would also like to use the opportunity to update you on a number of
delegation leadership changes. Alvaro Bermejo has formally taken over the
Board member position from Joanne Carter as of mid-July. The Alternate Board
member Kieran Daly has taken up a post with the Gates Foundation as of
August 1st, and will therefore no longer be representing our constituency.
The delegation has asked Joanne Carter to stay on as the interim Alternate
until the end of the next Board meeting (November) so that the delegation
can select a new Alternate after the summer break and have the selected
candidate attend the Board meeting in November before formally taking up the
position.****
