Hey everyone:
www.avaaz.com has a website which will tell you whether the area you vote in
may be close and who to vote for in order to avoid a Conservative
government. If you want to vote the conservatives out, then you will want
to check this out. I have never seen human rights campaigners come out with
something like that before and have to think that they believe the situation
to be extremely worrying if the Conservatives get in.
All I can tell you is what I know of the Conservatives, the Liberals and the
NDP and their records on AIDS.
I have been to the World AIDS Conferences since 1996 and there were two in
Canada during that time - one in Vancouver in 1996 and one in Toronto in
2006.
The first conference was during the time of the Liberals when Chretien was
the Prime Minister. During that time, Chretien and the Liberals did not
have an AIDS Strategy (can you imagine? 1996 and still no Strategy!) and
fearing a demonstration, he refused to attend the conference. Instead, he
sent his Minister of Health. When he got up to address the conference
participants and world leaders the whole front section collectively got up
and turned their back on him... that was their opinion of no health
strategy!
The second conference was in Toronto and even though major world leaders
were at the conference - including Heads of State from Africa - Prime
Minister Harper found pressing business in Nunavit. The Conservatives
announced they were going to come out with a funding plan after the
conference. They did, but it was not new money just money taken from other
areas of AIDS funding and the media and public were not dummies and quickly
pointed it out.
Now you might say "well, how do we know that this won't be Jack Layton's
plan too?" All I can tell you is that when I was in Toronto I saw Jack
Layton at every single large community event that I was at (I have no idea
what else he went to). He was at the opening ceremony and came to shake our
hands, he was at one plenary, standing with nurses and doctors demonstrating
when Bill Clinton and Bill Gates were speaking, and he was at the
Candlelight Vigil. I talked with him and was very impressed with his caring
and honesty. I formed a totally new opinion of him at that conference.
So that is my experience of our current leader and two opposition members.
I'm sorry I don't know anything about Elizabeth May and did not hear of her
at the conference.
