Your opinion matters to us! In 2008, CATIE became a central contact point, in both English and French, for HIV information in Canada.

We would like to know how we are doing. So we are asking people working in HIV to <http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8S7VF57> complete this short survey. It will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. All your answers will be anonymous and you can choose which questions you wish to answer. Please distribute this within your own networks. We would like as many people working in HIV as possible to complete this survey. Thank you.

5) What’s new in hepatitis C?

This section is dedicated to information on hepatitis C. For more information, please visit <http://www.hepcinfo.ca/> www.hepCinfo.ca.

a) World Hepatitis Alliance applauds World Health Assembly decision.

The World Hepatitis Alliance has welcomed the agreement of a World Health Organization (WHO) resolution on viral hepatitis by the 63rd World Health Assembly in Geneva on May 21, 2010.

For the first time, the resolution recognizes the global impact of hepatitis B and C – two diseases that kill one million people a year and which to date have not received the global attention they deserve. The World Health Assembly has established a robust framework to deliver improvements in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and awareness. The resolution clearly states the need for global coordinated action to tackle viral hepatitis backed by dedicated resources. It also provides global endorsement of World Hepatitis Day as the primary focus for national and international awareness-raising efforts.

10) Study of the Public Health Agency of Canada’s HIV/AIDS Funding Programs’ Structure – Focus Groups’ Discussions with Stakeholders.

In November 2009 the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) informed you of

1) the extension of funding until March 31, 2012, and 2) the undertaking of the study of PHAC’s HIV/AIDS funding programs’ structure. The study will examine the effectiveness, alignment with overall public health goals and the continued relevance of PHAC’s current HIV/AIDS funding program structure.

The firm Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton (RCGT) was awarded the contract to conduct the study following a competitive process.

As part of the study, RCGT will hold a series of group discussions with the

HIV/AIDS community stakeholders and partners. For this first round, RCGT has established a list of organizations based on a random sample of PHAC’s HIV/AIDS funding recipients. These organizations will be invited to register for focus-group discussions. If you receive an invitation (either by e-mail or by phone), and want to participate, please provide the consultants with the name of the person in your organization, such as the Executive Director or Board Chair, who can best represent the interests and perspective of your organization as well as those of the community and populations you serve.

The second round of discussions will examine the potential benefits and drawbacks of proposed new models and approaches for the funding programs’

structure. These will be done in a more targeted fashion with a sample of first-round participants who will receive a background paper to serve as the basis for discussions with RCGT. The second round is planned for early fall 2010.

In addition to the group discussions, interviews with representatives from provincial and territorial governments and key informants will also be conducted.

If you have not been contacted by the end of August, and you would like to participate, you may provide your input to the consultants directly. You can reach Marc Hyndman at 1-514-878-2692 (ext. 2237) or by e-mail at hyndman.marc at rcgt.com. RCGT will ensure your contribution to this important initiative is taken into account.

12) Canada’s Access to Medicines Regime (CAMR) campaign.

Although Parliament has risen for the summer, your help to build support in Parliament is still needed to ensure passage of Bill C-393, a private member’s bill which proposes to streamline CAMR, created in 2004 to help export lower-cost, generic medicines to developing countries. The bill is slated for study by the House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology when parliamentarians return to Ottawa this fall.

In May, it was reported that the Committee had received approximately 2,000 postcards, an unprecedented number. They have now received more than double the amount — some 5,500 postcards! Please keep sending them. To order postcards for distribution at your events or to your members, contact outreach coordinator Lindsey Simms at <mailto:lsimms at aidslaw.ca> lsimms at aidslaw.ca.

The campaign needs your involvement to ensure a stronger base of support for the proposed reforms, in the face of powerful opposition from the brand-name pharmaceutical lobby and some MPs. For further details about CAMR and the campaign to fix it, see <http://www.aidslaw.ca/camr> www.aidslaw.ca/camr.

13) New resource available from Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Safe Food Handling for People with Weakened Immune Systems.

This resource informs Canadians of the importance of food safety for people with weakened immune systems. Examples of people who may have weakened immune systems include transplant patients and those with diabetes and HIV/AIDS, as well as individuals receiving chemotherapy for cancer. People with weakened immune systems are advised to pay close attention to what they're eating as some foods present a higher risk for food-borne illness than others.

It's estimated that there are approximately 11 million cases of food-borne illnesses in Canada every year. Many of these illnesses could be prevented by following food safety steps. To minimize the risks of food-borne illness, people with weakened immune systems and their caregivers are encouraged to follow the four key steps to food safety: Cook; Clean; Chill and Separate.

15) Call for Endorsements to Halt Passage of Bill S-10.

As most of you know, the federal government reintroduced a cosmetically modified mandatory minimum sentencing bill (Bill S-10: AN ACT TO AMEND THE CONTROLLED DRUGS AND SUBSTANCES ACT AND TO MAKE RELATED AND CONSEQUENTIAL AMENDMENTS TO OTHER ACTS) in the Senate before they recessed for the summer. As Parliament resumes in the Fall, we believe it is important for the pertinent parliamentary committees - as well as provincial and territorial government agencies that will consider or be impacted by S-10 - to hear our collective voice, expressing our concern for a bill that will not only undermine the health and well-being of our communities, but also trample their human rights.

Last summer, many of you signed a very similar letter prepared by the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network. It is critical that you show your support again as this letter will be directed to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights and the Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs. In addition, we plan to CC provincial and territorial ministries of health and attorneys general.

To sign on to the letter, please e-mail Gennet Campbell at gcampbell at aidslaw.ca with 'BILL S-10' in the subject line, by 5:00 p.m. ET on September 7. Parliament Hill needs to hear our voices.
