URGENT ACTION ALERT — OCTOBER 18–22, 2010

Please circulate this immediately to all concerned Canadians.

TAKE ACTION NOW:

Phone your Member of Parliament this week and ask him or her to support the
changes Bill C-393 would make to Canada’s Access to Medicines Regime (CAMR).
Make your phone call today. Contact information for your MP can be found
http://bit.ly/cxU7u4. Not sure who your MP is? Visit http://tiny.cc/lsjdq
and search for your MP using your postal code. Please act before October
22nd.

Check out this easy script that you can use when speaking with your MP or
leaving a message with an assistant or on voicemail:

My name is _____ and I am a concerned citizen from ______ (insert your
riding and city/town). I would like to speak with ______ (your MP’s name)
about Bill C-393 which is currently before the Standing Committee on
Industry, Science and Technology.

I am deeply concerned that affordable, life-saving medicines get to places
like sub-Saharan Africa, where literally thousands everyday are dying for
want of medicines — in part because brand-name drugs are too expensive. The
Industry Committee is completing its review of Bill C-393 by the end of this
month. Then it is up to the House of Commons to debate the bill and pass it
at third reading.

I want to urge you (or insert MP name) to ensure that the bill is debated
when it returns to the

House of Commons and that you support it at third reading. Lives are at
stake and we have the power to make a difference by amending Canada’s Access
to Medicines Regime (CAMR) now. I look forward to hearing your response.
Thank you.

If you are unable to make a phone call, the next best thing to do is send a
personal handwritten letter to your local MP, outlining why Bill C-393 is
important to you and asking for their support. Handwritten letters carry
more weight than e-mails because MPs recognize the time and effort it takes
a constituent to draft a personal note and mail it.

Call to Action available here:

MORE INFORMATION

The Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network along with other civil society partners
is leading a campaign to reform Canada’s Access to Medicines Regime (CAMR)
through Bill C-393 which will make it easier for Canada to export affordable
essential medicines for diseases to the developing world to treat diseases
like HIV, tuberculosis and malaria. Since its creation in 2004, CAMR has
failed to deliver low cost medicines to the poor, because it is cumbersome
and not easy to use. Six years later, only one licence has been issued, to
export one AIDS medicine to one country, Rwanda. Bill C-393 is our best
hope to fix CAMR and ensure millions of people have access to the treatment
they need to survive, but it faces fierce opposition from the brand-name
pharmaceutical industry and some MPs.

Bill C-393 is currently before the House of Commons Standing Committee on
Industry, Science and Technology. This week, the Committee will begin
hearing from witnesses on the merits of Bill C-393. The Committee is
expected to complete its review and submit its report to the House of
Commons by November 1. If the bill survives, it should then be debated again
for a third time and will undergo its final vote in the House of Commons.
MPs need to hear that their constituents want Canada to do the right thing
and that their constituents are watching. The time to act is NOW. For
more information on this campaign and to learn about other actions you can
take please visit www.aidslaw.ca/camr. If you have any questions please
contact Lindsey Amèrica-Simms at lsimms at aidslaw.ca.
