Earlier this week Pivot and the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users wrapped up arguments in our human rights complaint against the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association’s Downtown Ambassadors Program.
During the hearing, the DVBIA’s private security consultant Dave Jones, two Ambassadors, and a videographer hit the streets and collected interviews with people they believed to be homeless.
Their video was an attempt to prove that we did not represent homeless people and our complaint was groundless. Instead, the video demonstrates the DVBIA’s total lack of understanding when it comes to the rights and realities of marginalized people. Check out our short <http://pivotlegal.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9a451e878eeec0a3e584da1a3&id=79d7a9a66e&e=0de74ccece> video highlighting some of our concerns with their interviews.
The DVBIA argues that its Ambassadors Program is a source of support for the homeless, directing them to shelters and other resources. But that wasn’t what we were hearing from our constituents and it wasn’t what we found when we started to examine the evidence. The Ambassadors’ own electronic patrol records showed that they had removed “sleepers”, “street people”, “drug users” and “panhandlers” from public space thousands of times between September 2005 and March 2010.
The tribunal is expected to deliver its ruling in this case sometime in 2011.
Sincerely,
Doug King
Campaigner
P.S. If you would like to read all the affidavits documenting removals of homeless people from public space, they are available here <http://pivotlegal.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9a451e878eeec0a3e584da1a3&id=a0892837cd&e=0de74ccece> .
Pivot’s mandate is to take a strategic approach to social change, using the law to address the root causes that undermine the quality of life of those most on the margins. We believe that everyone, regardless of income, benefits from a healthy and inclusive community where values such as opportunity, respect and equality are strongly rooted in the law.
