Do you despair that academic research evidence continues to be inaccessible
to non-academic communities? Why do we need to translate research evidence
into action? What are some practical ways in which your research evidence
can be disseminated to communities in friendly ways? What is the role of
experiential and outreach workers in community based research and
dissemination of results? This presentation will offer some basic Knowledge
Translation and Exchange (KTE) tenets and tips in the context of community
based research that will benefit your research and your professional work.
This workshop includes one community based example from the Downtown east
Side in Vancouver with one hands-on activity on how to begin to develop a
KTE plan for your research, your team or your non-profit organization.

 

Francisco Ibáñez-Carrasco has been the driving force behind Universities
Without Walls, tirelessly promoting the centre, enlisting faculty,
coordinating UWW Fellowship reviews, establishing Community Service Learning
opportunities and inspiring the Class of 2010 Fellows. His career was
recently recognized as the winner of the 2010 Award of Excellence of the
Canadian Working Group on HIV and Rehabilitation (CWGHR). An AIDS activist,
teacher, and researcher, Francisco was born in Santiago de Chile where he
taught high school during the Pinochet bloody regime. He came to Canada in
1985 and tested HIV positive six months later. Since completing his PhD in
Education in 1999 his research interests are in community based research,
gay men’s sexuality, and rehabilitation in the context of HIV. Between 2003
and 2009, he built the HIV/AIDS British Columbia Community Based Research
Facilitator program at BC Persons With AIDS Society (CIHR funded).
