2) What’s New at CATIE?

c) The CATIE HIV E-Learning Project.

CATIE continues to add to its collection of plain-and-simple interactive modules for people living with HIV. In Monitoring your health, CATIE’s (virtual) educators Mico and Tallah explain two tests commonly used to track HIV infection—CD4+ count and viral load. But there’s more to health than HIV, and the module integrates information about tracking other health issues facing people with HIV. The module puts it all together and, most importantly, shows how people with HIV can play an active role in tracking their health and staying well.

The e-learning modules can be found online at http://www.catie.ca/eng/Publications/elearning.shtml.

d) Prevention in Focus.

The latest issue of Prevention in Focus is now <http://www.catie.ca/eng/PreventingHIV/PreventioninFocus/PIF.shtml> available online. It features many different topics on prevention research that can help you plan and deliver services. One article entitled Treatment as prevention: We’ve all heard about it but what does it really mean? develops on a new idea that came to the forefront in 2006 at the International AIDS Conference held in Toronto. Treating people living with HIV may reduce the sexual transmission of HIV on a population level. So what does all of this really mean?

3) Latest CATIE-News
CATIE News items are short bulletins that cover emerging news and important developments in HIV. We have gathered the most recent CATIE News items for you here. To see back issues or to subscribe to CATIE News and receive each item when it is posted, visit the CATIE News page <http://www.catie.ca/eng/WhatsNew/WhatsNewIndex.shtml> on our website <http://www.catie.ca/catienews.nsf> .

a) Caution urged when switching regimens.

Merck and Company, Inc., the developer of raltegravir, has conducted two clinical trials in which some users of lopinavir-ritonavir-based regimens had this combination replaced with raltegravir. The studies were prematurely halted because of unexpectedly higher rates of virologic failure among some raltegravir users. The possible reasons for this unexpected finding and the implications for decision-making about switching therapies are discussed in this article.

b) Huge increase in STIs among middle-aged Canadians.

Scientists at PHAC recently reviewed and analysed data on three major STIs—chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. The PHAC analysis suggests that there has been a huge increase in these STIs, particularly among middle-aged Canadians. This finding could have implications for HIV transmission.

c) Influencing the decision to begin therapy for hepatitis C virus infection.

Researchers conducted a study to try to understand what factors influence decision-making by HCV-positive people. They found that, in addition to other factors, the partnership forged between doctors and patients plays a key role in the decision to initiate therapy.

d) Accelerated ageing of the brain found in some HIV-positive people.

Emerging research suggests that subtle impairment of the brain’s thinking abilities occurs even in some HIV-positive people who are adherent to therapy and who do not engage in substance use. These findings have spurred further research into HIV’s impact on the brain.

Under the Skin: A People's Case for Prison Needle and Syringe Programs

Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network

Between 2008 and 2009, interviews were conducted in person and over the phone in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, resulting in sworn affidavits or testimonials from 50 individuals who either were currently incarcerated or had previously served time in a federal prison. The hope is that their stories will strengthen the case for change, which governments continue to ignore even as a growing body of evidence highlights the need. This document is a follow-up to Clean Switch: The Case for Prison Needle and Syringe Programs in Canada.

8) Calling for your endorsement.

As some of you may know, the Legal Network released a report last month Under the Skin: A People’s Case for Prison Needle and Syringe Programs, featuring firsthand accounts of people currently and formerly incarcerated and their experiences with injection drug use in federal prisons.

As part of the advocacy work around this report and the issue of prison-based needle and syringe programs (PNSPs), Sandra Ka Hon Chu, Senior Policy Analyst at the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network, will be appearing before the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security on April 1, which is studying the issue of mental health and addiction in federal prison. One issue that will be raised is the need for comprehensive harm reduction measures in prison, including PNSPs. They also intend to present the endorsement of such programs by a broad group of organizations working on the health and human rights of people in prison and people living with HIV. PNSPs have been endorsed in Canada by the Ontario Medical Association, the Canadian Medical Association, the Correctional Investigator of Canada and the Canadian Human Rights Commission. Internationally, PNSPs are supported by the World Health Organization, UNAIDS, and the Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights.

Please contact Sandra at +1 416 595-1666 ext. 232 or schu at aidslaw.ca re: your organizational endorsement.
