Subject: 2nd Annual Symposium, a success!
Symposium Success
Close to 200 activists, policy-makers, researchers and lawyers come together
again this year for the Legal Network's Symposium on HIV, Law and Human
Rights. One of the highlights was the public lecture by Dr. Michel
Kazatchkine, Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS,
Tuberculosis and Malaria. A leading physician, researcher, administrator,
advocate, policy-maker and diplomat for over 25 years, Dr. Kazatchkine
delivered an important message on the critical importance of human rights
advocacy in overcoming the global AIDS crisis. His Toronto visit attracted
the attention of numerous media and even the Prime Minister's office,
prompting a last-minute opportunity for our guest to make a quick trip to
Ottawa in order to make his case directly to Stephen Harper for continued
and increased funding to The Global Fund.
The same evening during which Dr. Kazatchkine spoke also allowed us to
honour lawyer Ralf Jürgens with the Canadian 2010 Award for Action on
HIV/AIDS and Human Rights. The award, presented jointly by the Legal Network
and Human Rights Watch, rightly underlines the enormous contribution made by
Ralf. Known by many in the community, he has a long history of advocacy on
AIDS and human rights in most regions of the world, including co-founding
the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network and serving as its Executive Director
from 1998 to November 2004. Since December 2004, Ralf has worked as a
consultant and human rights advocate on HIV/AIDS, health, policy and human
rights in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Africa and Canada, including for the
International HIV/AIDS Alliance, Open Society Institute, UNAIDS, WHO and
most recently the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
In addition to the above, symposium registrants were able to hear from a
number of experts and community activists on criminalization of exposure to
HIV, immigration, reproductive rights and housing. A full report on the
symposium will be available in the fall issue of the Legal Network's Policy
and Law Review.
In planning the symposium's future, your suggestions are sought and welcome.
