We wanted to let you know how things went this week since it's one of the busiest in our year!

On Tuesday we launched the 8th annual Hope in Shadows photography contest for low-income residents of the Downtown Eastside. The camera handout is always one of the most amazing days for us. You can feel people's energy and excitement as they sign-up for a camera. Photographers often tell us that they’ve already worked out what they hope will be a winning shot (highly guarded secrets!) while others say they haven’t used a camera in years.


In the afternoon, participants attended a workshop hosted by two professional photographers and a gallery curator. Tips were given on how to take good portraits as well as memorable landscape photos. This year there is a new category called “your city landscape”. Photographers are being encouraged to take city-wide photos and to get creative – think urban and natural landscapes from a macro or micro point of view. 

This year the contest had a great personal story – thanks in part to a winning photograph from a previous contest, a brother and sister reunited after several years separation. The photography contest ends Friday with the return of the cameras to the Interurban Gallery.
