here is the Ignatieff office reply to my letter supporting Bill C-393.
Does anyone know is it too late to continue putting preasure on the
politicians? I think we need to combine our voices and our experiences
somehow. Any ideas gals?

Dear Sir/Madame:



On behalf of Michael Ignatieff, I would like to acknowledge receipt of your
recent email regarding Bill C-393, *An Act to amend the Patent Act (drugs
for international humanitarian purposes) and to make a consequential
amendment to another Act.*



There is no question that we need to get more low-cost medicines and other
essential medical supplies and equipment to people in developing countries.
It is the right thing to, and it is the Canadian thing to do.  A Liberal
government will commit itself to the procurement of quality medicines
wherever they are available.  We will do this to help countries most in need
to roll back devastating diseases like HIV/AIDs, malaria and tuberculosis
that are ravaging their populations.  This measure will also assist in the
creation of lasting health infrastructure in these countries.



With specific regards to Bill C-393, Liberal members will give unanimous
consent to allowing Brian Masse of the NDP to sponsor the bill on an ongoing
basis, so that C-393 can be debated in the House.



However, with regards to a final vote on Bill C-393, this is a private
members bill and the Liberal Party does not generally take formal positions
on Private Members’ Business so this Bill will be a free vote for our
Members.

Au nom de Michael Ignatieff, j’aimerais accuser réception de votre récent
courriel au sujet du projet de loi C-393*, une Loi visant à modifier la Loi
sur les brevets (drogues utilisées à des fins humanitaires internationales)
et à apporter une modification corrélative à une autre Loi.*

Il n’y a aucun doute que nous devons envoyer plus de médicaments à bas prix
et d’autres fournitures et équipements médicaux aux gens des pays en
développement. C’est la bonne chose à faire et c’est la manière canadienne
d’agir. Un gouvernement libéral s’engagera à fournir un approvisionnement en
médicaments de qualité partout où ils sont disponibles. Nous ferons cela
afin de venir en aide aux pays ayant le plus grand besoin de réduire la
progression de maladies dévastatrices comme le VIH/SIDA, la malaria et la
tuberculose qui ravagent leur population. Cette mesure permettra la création
d’infrastructures de santé publique durables dans ces pays.



En ce qui a trait au projet de loi C-393, les députés libéraux donneront
leur appui unanime pour permettre à Brian Masse du NPD de parrainer le
projet de loi de façon continue pour que le projet de loi C-393 puisse faire
l’objet d’un débat à la Chambre.



Par contre, en ce qui a trait au vote final du projet de loi C-393, puisse
qu’il s’agit d’un projet de loi d’initiative parlementaire et que le Parti
libéral n’adopte généralement pas de position officielle lorsqu’il s’agit de
ce genre de projet de loi, ce sera donc un vote libre pour nos députés.
