Dear Colleagues and Friends,
We are pleased to inform you of the launch of the new Gender & Sexual Health
Initiative (GSHI) of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. GSHI is an
umbrella program of several research projects both locally and
internationally focused on women, gender and HIV, sexual health, public
policy and access to care. This program reflects multiple community
partnerships and collaborations.
We also want to pass on a few recent GSHI publications:
Violence, condom negotiation, and HIV/STI risk among sex workers - This
editorial published in the Theme Issue on Violence and Human Rights of the
Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) addresses the impact of
the criminalization of the sex industry on violence and HIV/ STI risk among
sex workers globally (K Shannon, J Csete): CLICK HERE
<http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/short/304/5/573>
Hypocrisy of Canada's Prostitution Legislation - This editorial published
last month in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) addresses the
continued lack of response by the federal government to the ample evidence
of the failure of criminalization of prostitution on reducing harm and
promoting health and safety among sex workers, and supports the landmark
decision by the Ontario Superior Court in striking down the criminalized
laws (K Shannon).

Time to break silence on pragmatic, evidence-based sex work policy in Canada
- This editorial published this week in The Hill Times in Ottawa, also talks
about the decision by the Ontario Superior Court and the federal
government's failure to debate or even address the issue (K Shannon): CLICK

A peer-led mobile outreach program [MAP van] and increased access to
detoxification and residential drug treatment among women in street-based
sex work who use drugs (K Deering, T Kerr, M Tyndall, J Montaner, K Gibson,
L Irons, K Shannon, Drug & Alcohol Dependence, 2010, EPub Ahead of Print):
This paper examines the role of sex work-led outreach in reaching the most
marginalized sex workers in isolated public spaces across Vancouver. The
study found that MAP users were 4 times as likely to enter detox and/or
residential drug treatment over the 18month period. This association
persisted regardless of other risks or referral mechanisms. CLICK HERE
