Nevirapine linked <http://www.plusnews.org/Report.aspx?ReportId=90234> to
treatment failure

August 20, 2010

One of the cheapest and most commonly used drugs for treating HIV in Africa
- nevirapine - has been associated with an increased risk of treatment
failure in a retrospective South African study. Taking the drug as part of a
first-line treatment regimen doubled a patient's risk of treatment failure
and having to be switched to much more expensive second-line ARVs.

 HIV

August 19, 2010

Israeli researchers says they have discovered a way of killing off cells
infected with HIV that offers hope for a cure for the disease. The technique
involved getting the virus to overload the host cell with viral DNA, which
made the cell self-destruct and kill off the virus. However they warned that
so far they have only "cured" HIV in small dishes of cells in a laboratory.

Sexual <http://www.aidsmap.com/page/1503436/> risk behaviour doesn’t
increase in injecting drug users who start HIV treatment

August 19, 2010

There is no evidence that starting antiretroviral therapy leads HIV-positive
injecting drug users to have more risky sex, Canadian researchers report in
the online edition of AIDS. There was no increase in reported sexual
activity, unprotected sex, or number of partners. “Concerns regarding the
expansion of access to ART [antiretroviral therapy] for IDU [injecting drug
user] populations due to fears of increased HIV risk behaviour in the period
following ART initiation are unsupported,” comment the investigators.

Study Reveals Management and Prevention of HIV, TB & Malaria Remains
Inadequate within the Upstream Oil Industry Supply Chain; Greater
Collaboration between Industry Players is Needed

August 18, 2010

A new study reveals that the oil and gas industry supply chain - which
includes oil companies, contractors and sub-contractors - does not perceive
the full extent of the risks that HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria
pose to its workforce, productivity and profitability. The study - conducted
by management consulting firm Booz & Company in partnership the Global
Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GBC) - outlines
why the oil and gas industry should improve its understanding of the hazards
posed by these three epidemics and makes ten recommendations for how to make
health a priority.

Southern <http://www.aidsportal.org/News_Details.aspx?ID=14390> Africa: No
single formula for HIV risk

August 16, 2010

In southern Africa, prevention campaigns highlighting the HIV risks of
having more than one partner at the same time have largely targeted
heterosexuals and ignored the fact that men who have sex with men also have
multiple partners.

August 17, 2010

In July, in the flurry of media coverage surrounding the six-month
anniversary of the quake, there was a lot of discussion about the country’s
most obvious problems. Critics have assailed the slow movement of financial
aid into the country. By one estimate, workers have cleared less than five
percent of the rubble. But some worry that another, more hidden problem is
quietly bubbling in Haiti: The spread of HIV.
