Subject: Take Action: Safeway refuses to help dairy workers as well as its own employees
United Farm Workers
Support Southern California Safeway workers and Threemile Canyon Farms dairy workers.
E-mail Safeway CEO Steve Burd today!
For more than three months, Safeway and other Southern California grocery stores have been battling their employees in an effort to take away their vital health insurance benefits. In Oregon, Safeway has refused to ask Threemile Canyon Farms to support its dairy workers in their right to be protected by a union contract. Safeway processes milk from these dairies for sale in its supermarkets.
For nearly a year, Threemile Canyon Farms dairy workers have been organizing to bring in the United Farm Workers. But Threemile Canyon Farms refuses to even negotiate with the UFW. Management has hired union busting consultants to intimidate and coerce workers. This is happening at a dairy receiving $20 million of support from the state of Oregon--and last year alone more than $200,000 from the federal government.
The on-going strike in Southern California shows Safeway has clearly put profit over what is just and right for its own workers. By refusing to take a stand on Threemile Canyon Farms, Safeway is also disregarding the rights and well-being of the Oregon dairy workers.
Please contact Safeway Chairman and CEO Steve Burd and ask him to tell Threemile Canyon Farms to honor the workers' right to a union contract and to fairly settle the strike with his own employees.
Send your e-mail today!
