Subject: COUNCIL E-lert 02/19/03: Mayor's Olympic Legacy Increases Youth
Access to Sport and the Arts
COUNCIL E-lert 02/19/03: Vancouver Youth Legacy Fund Proposed by Larry
Campbell
WHAT'S HAPPENING?
-COPE Mayor Larry Campbell called today for the creation of a $10-million
Olympic legacy fund for youth going towards two endowments -- one for sport
and the other for arts.
-The Vancouver Olympic Youth Legacy Fund was developed in response to
concerns expressed by residents at Olympic forums and school assemblies.
-Following recommendations of the Romanow Report on Health Care, Mayor
Campbell's objectives include increasing physical activity in young people
by 10 per cent by 2010 through actions that include expanding free access
to sports, recreation and arts programs for residents under 19, starting
with free access to some recreational services, including public skating in
2003/4.
-The fund will be submitted for approval by the voters through referendum
at the time of the 2005 election.
-Other measures in the Mayor's report include introducing protections for
tenants and downtown neighbourhoods, developing the athletes' village as a
model of environmental sustainability, ensuring new or renovated Olympic
facilities in city parks are built to the highest standards with no net
loss of green space, and providing contract opportunities for Vancouver
businesses, job opportunities for Vancouver citizens and continued
community involvement throughout the bid.
-More details on the fund and other initiatives can be found in a 65-page
report of what Mayor Campbell heard from citizens in the run-up to
Saturday's plebiscite on Vancouver's participation in the 2010 Olympic Games.

A NOTE ON E-LERTS
E-lerts are COPE press releases and highlight information about upcoming
civic activities. Here's how COPE uses them:
(1) There are four types of E-lerts -- COMMUNITY, COUNCIL, PARKS and SCHOOL.
(2) There will likely be a maximum of three E-lerts a week for all
boards/council.
(3) You can sign up for selective E-lerts. To change your E-lert status,
please reply to this e-mail by putting the name of the board or council you
wish to be E-lerted to in the subject line (e.g., Jane Doe wants Council
and Parks so she replies with COUNCIL PARKS in the subject line). COMMUNITY
E-lerts are sent to everyone regardless of your E-lert status.
(4) If you do not wish to receive E-lerts, please reply to this e-mail by
putting "REMOVE" in the subject line.
(5) If you know anyone who would like to receive E-lerts, please send their
name, phone number and e-mail address to cope at cope.bc.ca.
PRIVACY NOTE: The names and addresses of subscribers to COPE E-lerts will
not be provided to any other individual or group.
