"Network Intrusion Detection on the Cheap"
Rui Pereira
Rui Pereira will review the fundamental concepts of Intrusion Detection,
then give a step-by-step tutorial on setting up a complete zero-cost IDS
system using Linux, Snort, MySQL, Apache, PHP, ACID and a host of
supporting characters. Both the Linux and Windows versions of the Snort
environment will be demonstrated.
About the speaker - Rui earned his B.Sc.(Hons) degree in Computer
Science and Statistics from the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
He has extensive experience in Information Technology (over 20 years),
the last seven of which have been focused on Information Security work.
He holds several Information Security certifications and has provided
Information Security consulting services to a wide range of local
organizations, both in government and private enterprise. He has been
directly involved in the Information Security community in Vancouver for
several years, having been a committee member of both the CIPS
Security SIG and WestCoast Security Forum. Rui also lectures,
facilitates and wrote two of the modules for the Certificate of
Information Technology Security course, a part-time certificate offered
jointly by the Justice Institute and UBC. Rui also develops and presents
several security courses at BCIT.

Stephen Thatcher
Stephen will discuss important issues relating to Monitoring &
Interception, Privacy, Lawful Access, Criminal Litigation, Civil
Litigation, and Evidence. He will also raise discussion on a variety of
topical legal questions including:
* What pre-incident preparation should corporation do?
* What legal obligations does a company have?
* What legal obligations do infosec staff have?
* What are the key issues for infosec professionals to be aware of?
* How should infosec professionals get more training?
* What issues do monitoring software such as intrusion detection
systems present?
* What is needed for court?
About the speaker - Stephen Thatcher maintains a private law practice
which includes litigation support on prosecution matters and civil law
issues relating to policing, and encompasses such IT issues as search
and seizure of digital evidence (criminal), electronic media discovery
(civil), and the challenges to privacy rights caused by IT. He has
instructed on a wide variety of law enforcement and IT topics at courses
offered or sponsored by, among others, the RCMP Pacific Region Centre
Academy, the Justice Institute of British Columbia (Police Academy), the
Canadian Police College, the British Columbia Institute of Technology,
Simon Fraser University and at conferences in the Canada, the United
Kingdom and Asia.
