Insights of a Testimony
with Randy Vasquez

Producer of Testimony: The Maria Guardado Story
(Screening at the Pacific Cinematheque, Sat. Sept 21 2:00 P.M.)

Randy will share, in a conversation with participants, his experience on the

challenges he faced while filming award winning documentary: Testimony: The
Maria Guardado Story. In it he tells the story of Maria, who travels back
to El Salvador and relives the most painful memories of her life, when she
was abducted and torture 20 years ago by faceless members of a
death squad. Hers is a difficult but, at the same time, healing journey.
How does a filmmaker prepares to tell the story of a survivor such as Maria?

Whose voices are to accompany that of the protagonist? How does a filmmaker
select what to keep and what to edit? Which ethical and/or moral dilemmas
must a filmmaker ponder upon during such projects?

Subtitles Are Political
with Lorena Jara

The political role of subtitles is that of allowing an activist’s voice to
be heard or of reproducing long held stereotypes. This is a rare invitation
for filmmakers to think politically about the role of translators and
interpreters during the production of a documentary . Guest Randy Vasquez
will tell of his experience during the filming of The Maria Guardado’s
Story.

Lorena Jara has an extensive experience as interpreter and translator. She
was the transcriber and key translator for Nettie Wilde’s "A Place Called
Chiapas". At present, she is a graduate student at SFU’s School of
Communication and is working in another main feature documentary. (This will

be a short version of her workshop.)

Sponsored by Video Inn, Working Group for Memory & Justice in the Americas
and Canada-El Salvador Action Network.

(this workshop will be held in English)
