Unceded Semiahmoo, Katzie and Kwantlen Indigenous territories, Surrey.

With the October 19 elections approaching, we have heard a lot of talk
about mobilizing “the Muslim vote”. What is “the Muslim vote”? What
does it mean for Muslim communities to engage in the electoral
process, after ten years of the Harper Conservative government?

Join us for an evening of speakers and facilitated small group
discussions to unpack the elections and highlight diverse Muslim
voices that are largely absent from mainstream discussions of
electoral politics.

Canadian policies have directly targeted Muslim communities, sometimes
as part of campaign rhetoric and sometimes as an outcome of actual
policy. Increasing surveillance in the name of national security, the
citizenship act, the expanded war on terror, the consistently
pro-Israeli stand in the face of war crimes, the ongoing battle to ban
the Niqab, increasing exclusions for refugees and newcomers to Canada,
have all had serious impacts on all of us.

At the same time, Indigenous and non-indigenous communities in Canada
are engaged in important discussions that question the legitimacy of
voting in the colonial electoral process as a whole.

** This is a non-partisan event intended to encourage questions and
dialogue, not to promote any candidate or platform. Given the nature
of this dialogue, we are inviting only the participation of
self-identified Muslims.**
