Critical Muslim Voices On Bill C-51: Beyond The First Wave Of Protests
Thursday, April 9 @ 6:30pm
Simon Fraser University (SFU) at Harbour Centre
515 West Hastings Street
This event is taking place on unceded xʷməθkwəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh,
and Səl̓ílwətaʔ territories, Vancouver.
Thousands of people across Canada have spoken out, written to their
MPs, published editorials and analyses, signed petitions, marched and
shouted in protest against Bill C-51.
While many voices have been raised against the "anti-terror" bill for
its infringement on civil liberties and for chilling freedom of
speech, Muslim opposition to this bill has been largely overshadowed
despite its disproportionate effect on the Muslim community and
racialized individuals.
Critical Muslim Voices, a group of activists based on unceded
territories in Vancouver, presents an opportunity to ask the questions
that others are not asking. Please join us as we unpack and discuss
not just the urgent political realities brought on by Bill C-51, but
also the way the ongoing framing of Muslim identity has constructed
and restricted Muslim issues since 9/11 -- with no end in sight.
Guest Speakers:
Khelsilem is a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh-Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw community organizer and
language revitalization activist.
Zool Suleman is an immigration and refugee lawyer.
CMV Panel:
Tahia Ahmed is a south asian activist, student, and founding member of
Critical Muslim Voices.
Hasan Alam is a lawyer, activist, and founding member of Critical Muslim Voices.
Rahat Kurd is a writer and founding member of Critical Muslim Voices.
